I quoted this in the ritual murder thread but figure it would be good to post it here too.

What is the connection between Judaism and Fɾҽҽmαsσɳɾყ?

The following is extracted from a paper by Paul M. Bessel of Arlington VA that accompanied presentations in February 1989. The FAQ would would like to thank David Kaufman (davidkman@hotmail.com) for providing this information; the full text of the presentation may be obtained from him. Jєωs were actively involved in the beginnings of Fɾҽҽmαsσɳɾყ in America. There is evidence they were among those who established Masonry in seven of the original thirteen states: Rhode Island, New York, Pennsylvania, Maryland, Georgia, South Carolina, and Virginia.

A Jєωιѕн Mason, Moses Michael Hays, helped introduce the Masonic Scottish Rite in America. Paul Revere served under him as Deputy Grand Master. There were several other Jєωs who held the masonic titles in the late 1700's: Solomon Bush in Pennsylvania, Joseph Myers in Maryland and later in South Carolina, and Abraham Forst of Philadelphia in Virginia in 1781. Another Jєωιѕн Grand Master was Moses Seixas in Rhode Island from 1791 until 1800. There were many other American Jєωιѕн Masons in early American history, including one in George Washington's original Fredericksburg Lodge.

Jєωιѕн Masons played an important part in the American Revolution, with 24 of them serving as officers in George Washington's army. In addition, several helped finance the American cause, including Haym Salomon, a Philadelphia Jєωιѕн Mason who with others contributed and raised money for the American war effort and loaned money to Jefferson, Madison, Lee, and others for their personal expenses. Salomon was imprisoned by the British and died in his 40's bankrupt and with penniless heirs.

There is evidence that Jєωs, including rabbis, continued to be involved in the Masonic movement in the United States. There have been at least 51 Jєωιѕн American Grand Masters. Today there are many Jєωs active in Masonry in America and other countries. Israel has about 60 Masonic lodges with 3,000 members.

Jєωs had also been involved to a small extent in the formation of modern Fɾҽҽmαsσɳɾყ in the early 1700's in England. Until then Jєωs were not permitted to participate in many of the ordinary activities of life. Then the Enlightenment concept of the universality of all people brought about a society where people's religious beliefs did not affect their rights as citizens. Jєωs were gradually permitted to exercise the rights of citizenship and to pursue their lives as they wished.

Many Jєωs viewed joining Fɾҽҽmαsσɳɾყ as part of their "emancipation" from the old legal and social exclusions. Modern Masonry was as much a product of the Enlightenment as the emancipation of Jєωs. Many society leaders were Freemasons and if Jєωs could join this fraternity that would prove they were being accepted. They could also use the opportunities presented by their participation in a social organization with Christians to prove the two could prosper by their association. Fɾҽҽmαsσɳɾყ's philosophy of the brotherhood of all people indicated Masonry would accept Jєωs as members.

There are many common themes and ideals in Masonic and Jєωιѕн rituals, symbols, and words:

Belief in G-d, prayer, immortality of the soul, charity, and acting respectfully to all people are essential elements of Fɾҽҽmαsσɳɾყ as well as Judaism, and of course other religions too.

Masonry and Judaism, as well as other religions and statements of ethical standards, teach that we must discipline ourselves and keep our passions in check. Jєωιѕн masons follow rituals in ѕуηαgσgυєs and in Masonic lodges to help them develop this ability.

Judaism and Masonry give the greatest respect and support for freedom of individuals. Judaism teaches that everyone is capable of good or evil and attempts to help us use our free will to choose the righteous path. Masonry teaches that those who are morally fit can find "light" in Masonry if they desire it of their own free will. The concept of exercising free will to accept the law and atone for past transgressions is what Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur are about.

Light is an important symbol in both Fɾҽҽmαsσɳɾყ and Judaism. Contrast the holiday of Chanukah with the use of light in Masonry, where it represents the Divine spirit, religious freedom, and rededication of the Temple in Jerusalem and of the spiritual Temple within us all.

One of the fundamental symbols of Masonry is the Temple of Solomon and the Second Temple, which also figured as the central part of the Jєωιѕн religion. King Solomon, one of the greatest figures in Jєωιѕн history, is also one of the most important figures in Masonic rituals.

While there are many common aspects of Judaism and Fɾҽҽmαsσɳɾყ, it also should be recognized that because of the history of attempts to force Jєωs to convert they can be uncomfortable about being asked to say Christian prayers or otherwise indicate non-Jєωιѕн beliefs. Some parts of Masonry use New Testament prayers, references to Saints, the cross as a religious symbol (although it is stated that the cross is being used as a symbol of religion in general rather than the Christian religion), and one Masonic organization requires aspiring members to swear to support the Christian faith. Jєωs must deal with these references to other religions by remaining quiet or not participating in those parts of Masonry.

Did Masonry always welcome Jєωs? No. Although a Jєω, Edward Rose, became a Mason in a London lodge in 1732, this event apparently excited attention and led to other lodges debating whether they should permit Jєωιѕн members. Eventually, significant numbers of Jєωs joined English Masonry where they were apparently welcomed. French Masonic lodges, and those in different countries affiliated with the French Grand Orient during the Napoleonic occupations, admitted Jєωs without restrictions. In 1869 a Jєω was Grand Master of the Scottish Rite in Paris. However, later in the 1800's French society became more anti-Semitic, culminating in the Dreyfus affair where a French army officer was unjustly accused of treason mainly because he was a Jєω, and French Masonry unfortunately also became more anti-Jєωιѕн. Today, some parts of French Masonry are officially neutral about religion and do not even require a belief in G-d. In Scandinavia, according to some sources, Masonry is officially Christian and does not accept Jєωιѕн members.

It is probably not surprising that the country with the longest history of anti-Semitic prejudice in Fɾҽҽmαsσɳɾყ as well as in society is Germany. Most lodges there did not permit Jєωs to be members, and they even questioned visiting Masonic brethren about their religion at the doors of their lodges and barred Jєωs even if they were Masons in good standing in other lodges. This caused lodges in England, the Netherlands, and the United States to protest but they did not retaliate against visiting German Masons.

German officials feared secret societies as potential sources of subversion, so the Prussian government became involved in Masonry as a means to watch and control it. The future Kaiser Wilhelm I was the patron of the three Berlin Grand Lodges for many years, and he decided that Jєωs would only be permitted if there was unanimous agreement. Since one of the Grand Lodges was known to be adamant against accepting Jєωs, this forced the others who wanted to be more tolerant to maintain anti-Jєωιѕн policies.

In Russia, Fɾҽҽmαsσɳɾყ was also suppressed because of the belief it might be used to support political activity against the Csarist regime, at the same time that Jєωs were prevented from obtaining rights of citizenship in that country.

Various claims were made by those who wanted to keep Jєωs out of Masonry. Some said Masonry was a Christian institution and Jєωs could not become members unless they converted. Some said only Christians could possess the good character necessary to achieve Masonic ideals.

Others said Masonry has Christian symbols and prayers but Jєωs could become Masons if they simply complied with requirements such as swearing on the Christian Gospels and eating pork at Masonic meals (both violations of halacha), without having to convert. However, there was also an argument that if a Jєω voluntarily complied with Christian practices he showed he was contemptuous of his own religion and had a bad character, and was thus unworthy to be a Mason.

Another argument was that Jєωs preferred to be in their own social groups. It was said they should not try to push their way into Masonic lodges where they were not wanted, would be uncomfortable, and would make others uncomfortable by their presence. Some Jєωs did join lodges that were primarily Jєωιѕн and the B'nai B'rith organization in its early days had a ritual parallel to Fɾҽҽmαsσɳɾყ.

Finally, there were the rawest antisemitic arguments. Some of those who wanted to keep Jєωs out of Masonry said the Jєωιѕн religion was inherently evil, or that Jєωs were racially and genetically evil and could never be permitted in Masonry even if they converted.

In general, Fɾҽҽmαsσɳɾყ's attitudes toward Jєωs mirrors those of the rest of society. Jєωs became more acceptable from the late 1700's until the 1870's. From that time on, anti-Semitism increased in many countries. This also occurred in Fɾҽҽmαsσɳɾყ, but by then Judaism and Masonry were being jointly attacked.

Freemasons and Jєωs always had critics. Eventually the bigots realized they could promote their ideas by tying Masons and Jєωs together as objects of hatred.

Critics said Fɾҽҽmαsσɳɾყ and Judaism were dedicated to undermining the institutions of existing society, including Christianity and the State, and pointed to the secrecy associated with both as proof of their evil intentions. Masons and Jєωs were said to be involved in, or benefited from, radical efforts such as the American, French, and Russian revolutions. Masonry and Judaism promoted free will of men, contrary to efforts of those who sought to insure that people had the "correct" thoughts. (This may explain why the Roman Catholic Papacy has expressed its antagonism toward Fɾҽҽmαsσɳɾყ so frequently and strongly since 1738, and why extreme conservatives in other religions also oppose Fɾҽҽmαsσɳɾყ.) Gradually the charge was made that Freemasons and Jєωs were both evil and they were purposely supporting each others' radical schemes.

Ironically, Masons and Jєωs were also sometimes accused of being too reactionary. Aristocrats often belonged to Masonic lodges, and some German Masons promoted the return of the Kaiser after World War I brought about a republic. Also, some Jєωs still dressed and acted in the same conservative ways as their ancestors in the middle ages and thus kept themselves apart from modern society.

Increasingly Jєωs and Freemasons were accused of being disloyal to their countries, keeping strange secrets, and designing to take over the world.

The ultimate form of this hatred was the sinister "Protocols of the Elders of Zion", which originated in Russia and received wide circulation after it was translated into German in the 1920's. Some bigots claimed this docuмent was a transcript of a meeting of Jєωιѕн leaders plotting world domination, in partnership with Freemasons. Although this docuмent was not even a clever hoax, its influence was unbelievably widespread and long-lasting in whipping up hatred against Jєωs and Masons by many, including Henry Ford in the United States during his long anti-Jєωιѕн campaign in the 1920's and 1930's.

It was a short step from this to the ideology of the nαzιs. Hitler attacked Masons as well as Jєωs, and after taking control of Germany and other European countries nαzιs used the slogan "All Masons Jєωs--all Jєωs Masons", and persecuted Masons, Jєωs, and others. The Soviet Union and other totalitarian regimes have consistently attacked Fɾҽҽmαsσɳɾყ, because they cannot tolerate an organization whose basic beliefs are freedom of individuals and tolerance and generosity toward all people.

Dictatorships have regularly attacked and persecuted Masons and Jєωs, and these attacks on Masons and Jєωs together are not all in the past. Last year a group called the "Islamic Resistance Movement--Palestine" said that Fɾҽҽmαsσɳɾყ and other "Zionist-affiliated" organizations are about to be liquidated.

Kabalah reader, Adam Weishaupt was a Freemason around the time he established the Illuminati. He also established the Jєωs only Grand Orient rite of Fɾҽҽmαsσɳɾყ.

I don't know when the B'nai B'rith was established though.

Jєωs came in relatively late, in the 1800s, and ultimately establishing the B'nai B'rith probably in the late 1890s to the early 1900s. But as Fɾҽҽmαsσɳɾყ's rituals and dogmas were in agreement with the Kabbalistic doctrines and much of the symbolism was taken from Jєωιѕн roots, Jєωs were welcomed, it seems.

The Freemasons were established during 1717, but I don't know by whom.

The Freemasons have a false history that they set up around themselves.

They claim Shakespear was one of them and Jesus and the builders of the Egyptian pyramids and Solomon's Temple.

Hard to have members that were around before your organization was.

I found this article of interest when I was doing my research on this subject back a couple of years ago.

History of the Hebrew Manuscript on the Origin of Fɾҽҽmαsσɳɾყ
I. Introduction
It was generally believed that modern Fɾҽҽmαsσɳɾყ was created in 1717 when its Grand Lodge of England was established. It was also generally believed that it was Dr. James Anderson who wrote its "New Constitutions." (See, for instance, Paul A. Fisher, Behind the Lodge Door, Shield Publishing, Inc., P.O.Box 90181, Washington D.C.20090, p. 24). It is true that the new name was adopted in 1717, but the real founder of Fɾҽҽmαsσɳɾყ is not Anderson. Moreover, few people, including most of its members, know that its origin is 2000 years old. Indeed, as far as we know, none of the current books on Fɾҽҽmαsσɳɾყ traces Fɾҽҽmαsσɳɾყ to its true origin. Masonry was founded by King Herod Agrippa at the suggestion of Hiram Abiud, with the consent of Moab Levy, Adoniram, Johanan, Jacob Abdon, Antipas, Solomon Aberon, and Ashad Abia in the year 43.

The original name was the "Mysterious Force." All its founders belonged to Judaism. In this article, we are going to present a true history based on the priceless manuscript written in Hebrew containing minutes of the meetings of the original founders of Masonry.

The following sections on Masonry are based on the English translation of the original manuscript written in Hebrew of the History of Masonry. The History was transmitted from the nine founders only to the direct descendants of these founders.

One of the original Hebrew copies was passed from Moab Levy, a founder, to Joseph Levy in 17th century. However, Joseph Levy's copy was robbed by Desaguliers, the founder of modern Masonry, after Levy was αssαssιnαtҽd by Desaguliers. Their only female child, also named Esther, was married to Samuel Lawrence. Their son Jonas Lawrence had a son Samuel by his first wife but later married Janet a Christian Protestant and converted to Christianity.

This only manuscript was passed on to Jonas who expressed his desire to publish it. But Jonas was αssαssιnαtҽd for his conversion to Christianity and his illegal possession of the History because he was not a direct descendant of the Levy line. Jonas's will could not be carried out until his great grandson, Lawrence G. S. Lawrence born 1868, who was a Protestant, translated the History from Hebrew into English. In this translation, Mr. Lawrence -- the last Descendant of the owner of the history (the Hebrew manuscript) -- adopted the title: The Dissipation of the Darkness, the Origin of Masonry.

In the following sections, we will quote extensively from the English translation of the Hebrew manuscript and the pages that contain the quotes refer to this docuмent.

II. History of the Hebrew manuscript
These are the words of Lawrence G.S. Lawrence:
Thus it is that I, Lawrence, son of George, son of Samuel, son of Jonas, son of Samuel Lawrence, of Russian origin, the last descendant of the descendants of one of the owners of this History, say:
I inherited from my father a manuscript composed by our ancestors in the Hebrew language and translated by one of them to Russian language. Another of them translated it to English. (p. 18).
Our ancestor, Jonas, introduced in the manuscript a series of events; this History, thus, being produced by him and his ancestors. Jonas arranged it and divided it into two sections. He wanted to publish it, but various obstacles impeded it: health, economic means and political events. He and his wife, Janet, conceived the idea of the publication of this History; on finding themselves incapable of doing so, they commended its publication to their son, my grandfather, Samuel. Jonas died without seeing his longing fulfilled. (p. 18).

My grandfather, Samuel, the son of Jonas, who was the son of Samuel Lawrence, here addresses his words to his son, George, my father. Samuel said to his son, George:
Son: Here you see these introductions headed by a list of names. These names correspond to the successive heirs of this History since the renewal of the Association (The Mysterious Force) where it changed its name to "Fɾҽҽmαsσɳɾყ." They include: Joseph Levy. (p. 19)
Joseph Levy is one of the renewers of the association. He is a Jєω and an heir of the History from his ancient ancestors who, in turn, inherited it from Moab Levy, one of the nine founders.
It was our ancestor, Joseph, who conceived the idea of changing the name of the association (The Mysterious Force) to Fɾҽҽmαsσɳɾყ and of reforming the statutes.
Here you have the details: He was sent to to London with his son, Abraham, and a friend named Abraham Abiud, all Jєωs, descendants of the heirs of the History and very well financed. They had made efforts to enter another city and, not having success, they headed for London. There they met two influential and knowledgeable persons who served as suitable elements to accomplish their purposes. They are:
John Desaguliers and a companion called George (last name unknown to manuscript owner). (p. 19)

After having strengthened the friendship among themselves, Joseph Levy revealed the name of the association, "The Mysterious Force," and related to his two friends, in synthesis and with discretion, some parts of the History, concealing its fundamental secrets. He also made it known to them that for a long time it was inactive, almost dead, needing for its renewal the change of name and the reform of the statutes in such a way that the new statutes and the changed name might attract many members. Thus it would grow. (p. 19)
With eloquence and cleverness, Joseph Levy succeeded in convincing his two friends, Desaguliers and George, of the necessity of reviving the association. Having achieved this initial success, they separated on condition that they would meet again, each one of them bringing three names appropriate for the new association, from which the specific name would come. The next meeting was held ten days later. Each one presented his names, the one approved being one of those proposed by Joseph Levy: Fɾҽҽmαsσɳɾყ. It was August 25, 1716. (p. 20)

Abraham, son of Joseph Levy, who had witnessed the two sessions, said:
This name had preference over the others for two reasons. First, because it is the same name that some Italian architects adopted in the 13th century (Freemasons). And second, because it was a suitable expression of the ancient signs and symbols used in the association, The Mysterious Force; symbols that pertained to construction and to architecture, proposed by Hiram Abiud, one of the founders, for the purpose of concealing the origin of the Association, attributing it to epochs prior to Jesus. (p. 20)
Desaguliers approved the words of my father, adding:
"In the third place, present-day architects and builders have associations, syndicates ond lodges where they gather to fortify and dignify their profession. With this name then, we can gather, all in a single association without anyone's knowing our purposes. And fourth, these two terms,' Masonry,' (construction) and 'Mason' are encountered since antiquity, will be a thick veil over the secret of the origin of the foundation; and, besides, without doubt, they will increase the prestige of the Association." (p. 20)

Our ancestor, Abraham Levy, before his death, added:
"Desaguliers specified that those people who joined the lodges before 1717 in London were masons, in the sense that they were engineers, architects, builders, apprentices, but they had no connection with the Association, The Mysterious Force, that began true Masonry." (p. 20)
For that purpose five men met: Levy, Desaguliers, and the companions mentioned above and they approved the addition of the term, "Free," thus unequivocally concealing the date of its foundation from the rest of the people in general and the members and associates in particular. (pp. 20-21)
John Desaguliers and his companion began to demand that Levy show him the History. Levy had made it known to them that it was translated into English, that three of the inherited manuscripts had been lost recently, four had been lost long ago, and there remained only his manuscript and one other ( Note: the other is the manuscript of Abraham Abiud. It is the one whose translation we have on hand). Such declarations excited Desaguliers and George extremely, the reason why they insisted on the need for a suitable copy so that with said copy it would be much easier for them to form the new statute. They showed themselves so faithful to the principles, desires and doctrines of Levy that they succeeded in convincing him to deliver a copy to them. It was delivered to them. A time passed during which they read it. (p. 21)
The five met again and decided to summon some friends on the pretext of establishing a "Unitive Association." The true purpose was the renewal of the Association, the Mysterious Force, its resurrection with the new name agreed upon by the five and the restoration of the first Principal Lodge (Jerusalem). Thus Levy wanted it. (p. 21)

On March 10, 1717 they invited several architects and acquaintances. The invited were presided over by a wise man named Dr. James Anderson, who was a friend of Desaguliers. After lengthy discussions they reached an accord and designated June 24, 1717, to realize a great meeting. (p. 21)
Meanwhile Levy was preparing his son, Abraham, for the great events of the future. Days later Abraham Levy journeyed to Portugal accompanied by Abraham Abiud, his relative. The latter is the descendant of Hiram Abiud, one of the founders, and owner of this copy. (p. 21-22)
Between March 10 and June 24 a great conflict was begun between Levy and Desaguliers and George because of their refusal to return the copy. In the June 24 meeting, the majority were on the side of Desaguliers and Anderson; as a result both conspired against Levy, assassinating and robbing his papers including the aforementioned English copy and the Hebrew copy. (p. 22)
On the June 24, 1717 meeting, they agreed on creating the Grand Lodge of England. Here it is necessary to mention the names of the successive heirs of this History, from our ancestor, Joseph Levy, the renewer of the Association, down to me, Lawrence.
Joseph Levy was the son of Nathan, who was the son of Abraham, Abraham the son of Jacob, Jacob the son of Nathan, Nathan the son of Jacob, who was the son of Isaac, who was the son of Moab, Moab the son of Rafael, etc., etc. back to Moab Levy, the first ancestor and one of the Nine Founders of the Association, the Mysterious Force. (p. 22-23)

I think the adl was formed about 1913,it came into being because of a murder case in Atlanta GA of a 12 yr. old girl by the name of Mary Phagan. She was murdered by the Leo Frank - head of the bnai brith in Atlanta at the time.

The establishment of masonic logdes for the goyim seems to be relatively new in the scope of history (last few hundred years), however the "religion" of Fɾҽҽmαsσɳɾყ does have its root in judaism. Many believe masonry traces back to king Solomon after he turned apostate.
