  • This is truly disgusting in my opinion.

Yet another reason why I despise big corporations...

(Note: cut off music on that video though since the rap music is just as awful as watching those animals get tortured)

There actually is a movement for self sustainablility that I trully believe in. I subscribe to the Mother Earth News and although it is left leaning - I do so for informational purposes mostly because there is a wealth of information in there.

In the June / July Issue There are articles about Canning - Eating locally grown foods - and Urban Farming using Vacant land - Chickens - Composting techniques using earthworms to grow fresh vegetables which can be canned and eaten for several months.  The Author , Joel Salatin , makes good points that as a society we should get away from the Corporate Farming Culture which insists we eat foods grown or produced hundreds of miles away from where we all live - trucked to market - sprayed with chemicals or injected with hormones to make the Produce or meat look more presentable - when in fact we already have a working urban farming model where food waste is turned into Compost and Compost into more food and that food canned and preserved. Chickens can be grown in an urban environment.  In rural areas - a homestead as small as 4 acres can be self sustaining. We have the Technology today. What we need is a cultural shift away from these types of corporate farming practises.

    To Quote:

No Culture has ever survived if it was not able to feed itself. What can we do today? 5 simple steps we can take today:

    1)  Edible Landscapes. Campuses , lawns , and anywhere plants can grow - move these towards edible rather than ornamental . It takes no longer to prune an apple tree than an ornamental pear.

    2) Use the Margins Road rights of way , parks , areas under power lines , public spaces and unused lots - fill them with food plants.

    3) Eat Bioregionally Save the foods trucked in from distant places for Special occasions rather than every day use.

    4) Build a solarium on the south side of your house. You will be able to grow plants in it.

    5) Replace the 2 Parakeets with 2 Free Range Chickens.  Not only will they not make as much noise - they will lay eggs and everything they eat will become compost whether it be kitchen scraps , insects , or weeds.
