Fr. Coughlin was a thorn in the side of FDR. He told Cardinal Spellman to get rid of him. But his bishop, Michael Gallagher, protected him. When Bishop Gallagher died Cardinal Spellman and Joe Kennedy conspired with Cardinal Pacelli (later Pius XII) to get a bishop for Detroit who would pull the plug on Fr. Coughlin. They made Edward Mooney the new Archbishop of Detroit. He didn't support Fr. Coughlin and the latter was soon shut down. He realised early that the Church was rotten. He lost most of his popularity when he was still anti-war after Pearl Harbor.
