I would be very cautious in defining terms based on feelings, Joe. Feelings are terribly fickle, and often founded upon our selfishness and disordered desires, as opposed to justice which orders things properly. Feelings cannot be trusted to order things properly, in general.

I think paying too much attention to feelings has put our society into very hot water. One only needs to look at all of the "tolerance" speech that plagues society to see this.

Good post. Joe's post was good until the last sentence. But I understand the point he makes. Perhaps if he put "legitimately" before "feel" it would be better.

Abuse is often insidious and the law should allow some room for feelings on the part of the victim. I don't have a legal mind unfortunately, but I believe there should be some weight on the victim's fear and not just a bruise that a doctor can see. The DV system/industry is terrible and involves a lot of bearing false witness, I'm not defending how things are.
Unfortunately there are unscrupulous people that win or use the legal system to their advantage because they can lie and fake and mix half truths no matter how just the laws are.
