Iran 81mm Mortar Story: Twists, Turns, and Eating Crow
    - M. R.

THE "IRANIAN" 81MM MORTAR WEB PAGE IS A FAKE!
This web page is being waved around to "prove" that Iran does make 81mm mortar rounds like the one the US Government is trying to use to justify an invasion of Iran.

Take a good look at the soldiers and weapons at the very top of the page. They look Iranian to you? And why does an Iranian company put together a web page where their own country is obscured from view on that world map?

Check the spelling on the tabs. "Miscellancous"? "Caliber" uses the American spelling, rather than "Calibre." And Tehran is spelled "Tahran" on the contact page. This web page was assembled in a rush.

Take a look at the page source in your browser. The images and directories on the server are all in ENGLISH.

The phone numbers on the contact page are all 7 digit numbers. But in July of 2005, Iran switched over to an 8-digit phone system.

And finally, the traceroute traces the IP not to a business, but to a university!

Why is the Iranian Ammunition Industries Group's webpage in English?
Now for what possible reason would an Iranian company have a website in English but not in their native language, nor in the language of the majority of their neighbors? It makes no sense!

Clearly, the lack of a Farsi version of this page http://www.diomil.ir simultaneous with the existence of a Farsi version of this page http://www.qodstv.ir/ indicates that something is going on here.
Is the website at http://www.iramig.ir/Products/Mortar%20Bombs.htm which purports to prove Iran does make 811mm Mortar rounds, a fake intended to recover from a major propaganda goof? - M. R.

The site is fine, the link had an extra "comma" you need to get rid off.

I don't quite understand the logic at hand though.  Sounds to me like debunkers in over their heads, who seem to have found some interesting anomalies, but can't really explain them.

I mean, what is so surprising about an arm manufacturer to have it's site in English...  Is it not the international language for trade ?

Manufacturers of such specialized weapons is a small niche where  players know each other well, if this munition was truely not made in Iran, bells would be ringing in no time.  Clinging on web page anomalies seems rather nerdish and out-of-touch to me.
