I believe a lot of the pro-Russian sentiment comes from Westerners sickened by what the Left has done to their homelands. There are different strains of Russian propaganda designed to appeal to disillusioned Westerners. Unfortunately, this isn't sincere on the part of Russia, which is a multi-ethnic empire and supporter of Communism around the globe. If Perestroika was a deception, then supporting Russia is inadvertently supporting Communism on the part of Westerners who find appeal in Putin's seemingly pro-nationalist/pro-natalist rhetoric.
