Credit unions are banks where the accounts holders are the owners of the institution rather than shareholders. Credit unions often advertise more favorable interest rates and lower fees. The downside to credit unions is that they are often very small and only have a few offices.
In my experience, there are little to no differences for an average account holder when comparing a credit union to a small or medium-sized bank. There can be big differences, however, when you compare them to the large banks.
