  • They are not of good will when they eat meat on Fridays of Lent. Oh, and this goes for Catholics as well as Protestants -- whoever the shoe fits.

First of all, it was much more common (though not universal) to give up meat on Fridays of Lent at least, as recently as the 80's and 90's.
(as an aside -- when I was in public school, "Spring Break" always coincided with Holy Week and Easter. It no longer does.)

Second of all, I bet most Protestants wouldn't go out to a nice sit down restaurant to celebrate the death of a dear pet they had for years. They'd say "I'm not hungry." due to sadness. But they have no problem feasting on Good Friday and the other Fridays of Lent. What can I conclude? That there is no real love in their heart for Jesus Christ, who underwent a bitter Passion and died in agony on the Cross to redeem mankind. And furthermore, that these fake Christians have more REAL love for their pets than for Jesus.

Thirdly, liberal dupes who believe in Global Warming are more to be admired for their honesty and sincerity, because they believe giving up meat FOREVER will create a better world for their children (helping to stave off Global Warming, via less greenhouse gasses). But they practice what they preach! They give up meat COMPLETELY because of a lie they've been told (that they believe in), while Christians who claim to believe in God, Jesus Christ, and the Redemption won't give up their hamburger ONCE A WEEK to make a real demonstration of love for God, Who gave them so much. They won't even do this during Lent, the season when we're supposed to give some thought to what Jesus suffered for us!

Fourthly, you can't point to "oh, it's no longer obligatory" and all that, because none of these Friday-in-Lent meat-eaters are doing ANYTHING ELSE in place of the old Friday abstinence. They have completely cut out penance, as if they have no need of it.

They are living for this world, living in pleasure like anyone else, not inconveniencing themselves at all for their religion. They want a convenient, easy religion, or none at all. But they prefer to have it both ways -- to have all the "nice internal feelings" religion can provide, while having all the pleasures of the pagan and the worldling. A pretty sweet deal -- until you die.

  • Matthew, Friday abstinence is the Church's positive law.  The Church's positive law only applies to the Christians whom she sees fit to bind.  That simply does not include Protestants, certainly not since the promulgation of the 1917 Code of Canon law.  If you want to complain that Protestants aren't Catholic, fine, I'm sure everyone will agree.
    .
Complaining about them eating meat on Friday would be like complaining that they don't receive Holy Communion during Easter time, or that they don't go to confession at least once a year.
"Be kind; do not seek the malicious satisfaction of having discovered an additional enemy to the Church... And, above all, be scrupulously truthful. To all, friends and foes alike, give that serious attention which does not misrepresent any opinion, does not distort any statement, does not mutilate any quotation. We need not fear to serve the cause of Christ less efficiently by putting on His spirit". (Vermeersch, 1913).

I thought of this, but I'm not saying they are subject to the Catholic Church positive law per se.

I'm holding them up to their own standards. They are heretics who claim to live by Scripture, and they claim to be followers of Christ. But Jesus fasted 40 days in the desert, and did other prayer and penance. He taught that "Unless you do penance, you will likewise perish." He also stood up for the truth and didn't approve of the errors of his day. He didn't "virtue signal".

Furthermore, any protestant church worthy of the name used to have their "faithful" practice some kind of penance during Lent. It might not have been exactly like the Catholic method, but there was something. Today nobody does anything.

I'm just looking at things objectively. There is such a thing as a "rubber meets the road test". If once in a while people eat less or don't feel like eating because of losing a job, a pet, a loved one, etc. but they never fast or make themselves sad because of Jesus' Crucifixion, doesn't it prove that their religion is totally vain?

  • That's all fine and agreeable but it makes your title and OP a bait-and-switch.

  • As I said in the other thread: let it go.

You said your peace; well done.  You got blasted; so what?

Moderns are faithless schmucks; get over it.

But their own standards are wrong and you want them to uphold them?
What has the Light to do with the darkness....you're preaching to the choir.

It depends on which Protestants.  Some Protestants don't even believe in acknowledging Lent at all.

That said, yeah, giving up meat on just Lenten Fridays is like the bare minimum.

  • I try not to eat meat on all Fridays, not just during Lent.
