  • All very doubtful as quotes to justify a ridiculous supposition.

    To quote your "good" self:
Then to justify your denial that this belief has not been condemned, albeit by the approval of Pope Pius IX of the ruling of the Congregation of the Index, you go on to quote some "indulgenced prayer" which says

Which signature has the greatest weight, especially of a prayer that talks of the Ethiopians of Central Africa, when a person with a slight knowledge of geography knows that Ethiopians hail from the far north of Africa. Nor does it mention blackness.

Your campaign to prove blacks cursed makes me think you are some sort of a troll to smear the good name of CathInfo.
You don't know what your talking about.  "Ethiopians" was a common term to refer to all blacks.  At one point Ethiopia was much larger than it is today, like a third of Africa.  A common term for blacks in the western world for blacks, was an 'ethiope' in the 19th century.

And about the reason why Pius IX condemned that pastoral letter was most likely because he was still a liberal.  I have studied him in the past and it is well known he was elected as a liberal reformer, and started his papacy as one, and later on, he realized the world was trying to destroy Catholicism, and he became a strong orthodox Pope.

This is why I wondered if "Ethiopian" was used in a different sense in the 19th century.

No, Ethiopians referred solely to the Christian Africans residing in Abyssinia. And no Ethiopia(then called Abyssinia) was never anywhere close to a third of Africa. Probably more like a third of a third at its peak.

  • No its a third.  And you already proved my main point, so thank you.  I didn't know that it was in the dictionary.

  • I had read both your correction about the word Ethiopian, and Rum's response to me yesterday but was not able to respond there and then. I see that you were right Tdrev about Ethiopians. Incredible that the map could have changed so much!

  • Did you miss this part?

"My view on the curse is only that the Church allows this interpretation." Do you dispute this?

I don't deny that this teaching has been condemned by the Congregation of the Index in 1864. .....

I'm not campaigning to prove that the curse of Ham applies to blacks. I don't know that it does apply to them, but I know Fr. Meagher was never punished for stating as much. His book "How Christ said the First Mass" must have received an imprimatur. Pope Leo XIII conferred on him Doctor of Divinity. And St. Ephraem the Syrian was made a Doctor of the Church in 1920, long after the Congregation of the Index condemned Bishop Auguste Martin's letter.

As for my being a troll to make Cathinfo look bad, Matthew took part on the curse of Ham thread, if only momentarily, though I don't know what he thinks about the curse of Ham. If you have a problem with any of my posts you should report them.
    .
Last things first, I have not read enough of your posts, Rum, nor been sufficiently disturbed by those I have read,  to report them.
    .
About Fr Meagher, I have not read his book but only heard of it and I know nothing about him nor could find any info on him. I am presuming that he is a product of his nation and time and has been strongly influenced by those. I did find his book online and it showed no imprimatur, though I cannot say for sure whether or not it has one.
Isn't Doctor of Divinity an award from a University?
    .
As for that quote of St Ephraim: to be continued....

  • Is there no other reliable sources for your references than CathInfo. Everything you have quoted is taken straight from the Anne Catherine Emmerich thread. Don't you have an original reference? The St Ephraim one is from an name changing Christ hater, Paul de la Garde. Can't we have the quote straight from the Church Father?

No, I didn't miss it. The Church, as far as I know, has only opposed this view, and never sanctioned it. Moreover the Gospel makes it clear that, in the New Covenant, there is no distinction between different nationalities and races.

I can't quote where the Church has condemned such thinking, (maybe someone better informed than I can do so) but Scripture does.

  • On St. Ephraem you'd find this, by the Jєω David Goldenberg, which speculates that the quote is dubious.

    Here's some info. on Fr. Meagher: 1, 2, 3, 4.

We're all products of our times. The universal perception of blacks as the most primitive of peoples doesn't hinge on whether or not the curse of Ham applies to them. Even if the curse doesn't apply to them I can see why some would be mistaken in thinking that it does.

  • Guess what. There is no such thing as "universal perception of blacks". You do understand the meaning of universal?

  • It looks like the chief rabbi needs to do some penance.

    Correction Poche.

    The chief rabbi needs to:

    1. Learn and believe in the Catholic Faith.
    2. Be Baptized (with water).
    3. Go to Confession and then do penance.

BTW, Rabbis don't believe in Heaven, so there's no way they will get there, unless they receive the Catholic Sacraments :farmer:
"Some preachers will keep silence about the truth, and others will trample it underfoot and deny it. Sanctity of life will be held in derision even by those who outwardly profess it, for in those days Our Lord Jesus Christ will send them not a true Pastor but a destroyer."  St. Francis of Assisi

Yeah, I think I'll go out on a limb a bit and say that just about everyone, including blacks, views blacks as the most primitive people. However, not the most evil people. That title would go to Jєωs.

"Black" as I'm using the word doesn't include people who are mixed raced but call themselves black, such as Derek Jeter, Halle Berry, et cetera.
