  • Ah yes the "good" old John Hughes classic full of teenage rebellion, marijuana use, "It's all my parents fault" nonsense, etc.

Of course we have 5 different kids walk into detention or whatever being different cliques and they all "bond" over the hatred they have for their parents and hook up and be couples, etc., etc., etc.

I'm not even going to comment on the stupidity of kids smoking marijunana as that is obvious (of course our popular culture has no problem promoting drug use) but I really think the only kid who has an actual sob story about his parents is that "criminal guy" whose father lights cigarettes on his arm, and even that is no excuse for his thug behavior (yes I do not give excuses for this kid).

Anyway it is the usual counterculture formula of kids being "smarter" than their parents and knowing and understanding more.

By the way just being out of high school myself I have to look back and laugh at the petty teenage concern of fretting over being popular and liked and things of that nature. Once you become and adult and go into the real world you realize how high school was just so easy, even though back in those days you were always going through some teenage drama.

  • So, out of curiosity, what prompted you to make a comment on a movie that came out in 1984?

  • I am a movie critic and usually I comment on a movie that comes into my mind that I've seen sometime in my past.

(By the way I've commented on movies that came out all the way back in the 1940's.)

  • The Breakfast Club is a classic 80's teen movie. I saw it in the theatre when it first came out.

Whether it is a classic or not morally it is pretty bad.

That should have been I see.

Unless sere is some insulting word in another language, I am baffled as to why someone would down thumb a polite acknowledgement of Trad Guy's perfectly pleasant response to my request for information.

    Wait a minute...

By the way just being out of high school myself

...with due respect, if you are only "just [ . . . ] out of high school," dubbing yourself "a movie critic" may seem a little... at the very least, premature?

Although a great deal of the literature of film criticism is saturated with liberalism, one should at bare minimum read the few essentials and have a working knowledge of the terms unique to the medium before announcing oneself "a movie critic."  A more appropriate term for what you appear to be, Traditional Guy 20, is "movie moralist" - which is fine, but distinct from "movie critic" (as your own criticisms are not grounded in film theory, but in what seems like a fine morality).

(or maybe I'm taking this too seriously!)

Between the OP and this post, I'm half tempted to re-watch this putrid movie to see how the editing holds up, and what kind of a "Marxist reading" might be gleaned.  Although I must admit, the one time I saw it (three or more years ago, I forget the occasion), it didn't seem terribly memorable apart from the title itself.

  • Wow, I bet that movie seems dated now. The brat pack are all middle-aged, as are those who watched it in the theater. Like 16 Candles, raunchy in many places.
