  • FERGUSON, Mo. (KMOV.com) – Tensions are high in Ferguson, Missouri and a large police presence is on hand after a teenager was shot to death by a police officer.
The St. Louis County Police Department held a press conference Sunday morning where they stated Brown was shot “more than just a couple of times” by a 6-year member of the Ferguson Police department.
The incident happened in a roadway Saturday afternoon near the Canfield Green Apartments in the 2900 block of Canfield.
Witnesses tell News 4 that Mike Brown, 18, was unarmed and had his hands in the air when he was shot multiple times by a Ferguson police officer.

Dorian Johnson tells News 4 he was walking with Brown when the officer confronted them and drew his weapon.
“He (the officer) shot again and once my friend felt that shot, he turned around and put his hands in the air,” said Dorian Johnson, a friend Brown’s. “He started to get down and the officer still approached with his weapon drawn and fired several more shots.”
Raw video: Interview with Ferguson Police Chief Tom Jackson
St. Louis County NAACP President Esther Haywood told News 4 that Brown was shot once by the officer and then an additional nine times as he lie in the street. Police have not confirmed that account.
Watch: witness describes officer involved shooting
“He was a good kid. He didn’t live around here,” said Desuirea hαɾɾιs, grandmother of the victim. “He came to visit me and they did that to him for no reason.”
Ferguson Police called for assistance from St. Louis County and nearby municipalities as large, emotional crowds gathered at the scene. In all more than 100 officers from 15 departments responded to the area. Tactical teams in riot gear were also called in. At one point, a dumpster was set on fire in protest of the shooting. A section of West Florissant Avenue near the scene was closed for a time on Saturday evening.
Through Saturday afternoon and evening some among the crowds were yelling profanities at police demanding justice. At one point gun shots rang out in the area as investigators gathered evidence. That prompted numerous police canine units to move in and move the crowds back.
The St. Louis County NAACP says they have launched their own an investigation and plan to “get to the bottom of what has occurred and will work to ensure that justice is served for all victims involved.”
Haywood also released a statement saying: “We are hurt to hear that yet another teenaged boy has been slaughtered by law enforcement especially in light of the recent death of Eric Garner in New York who was killed for selling cigarettes. We plan to do everything within our power to ensure that the Ferguson Police Department as well as the St. Louis County Police Department releases all details pertinent to the shooting. We strongly encourage residents to stay away from the crime scene so that no additional citizens are injured. I have spoken directly with St. Louis County Police Chief Jon Belmar, and I am confident that both he and his department will ensure that the investigation is conducted properly and that all details are kept transparent.”
Ferguson Police Chief Tom Jackson says St. Louis County Police have taken over the investigation and the officer involved in the shooting has been put on paid administrative leave.

  • I bet the police officer who shot him was a white protestant.

Those black-hating WASPs are the worst.

  • Yes, the teen was shot. That seemed to be good reason for the negro population to loot and burn their own town. I wonder if the NAACP will investigate that?

  • I live in the OLD AMERICAN WEST and it is called HOUSTON, TEXAS.
Even though there are many opportunities for Blacks and other people
of color.  They can get jobs and not even qualify as much as a
white person.   They are the first to fall when times get very tough.
There are so many black on Hispanic gang murders and versus .
At the Spring High School off the 45 Freeway South Bound towards
Houston, at 7:am a Hispanic and a black gang started shooting each
other in the Cafeteria. A number of deaths and serious injuries resulted.
The following Monday at the memorial service held in the High School
stadium, the shooting continued in which I understand that the
suspect has not been caught. It is getting as bad as gangland
Chicago. It does not matter if the cop is black, Hispanic or white
and so PC they are now.  The black is always the first ones to
suspect when a crime is committed. And, they get murdered
over little or no probable cause
Yes Dolores, In Houston, the old west of the 1800's still lives on,
and the black man still rides the back of the bus even if the driver
    is a black woman.

  • Yeah, there's more to the story all right:

    From Reuters:

Police fired tear gas after rioting broke out for a second night in Ferguson, Missouri, despite calls on Monday for calm from the mother of a black teenager who was shot to death by police at the weekend.
Ferguson Police Chief Tom Jackson said officers were focused on dispersing the crowd, which was smaller than the night before, but were making arrests and reported being fired on at some locations.
“They are shooting at us now,” Jackson said, adding that officers from 10 to 15 jurisdictions were assisting Ferguson.
Michael Brown, 18, was shot to death in Ferguson, a mostly black St Louis suburb, on Saturday afternoon after what police said was a struggle with a gun in a police car. The FBI has opened a probe into the racially charged case.
Brown’s family has hired Benjamin Crump, the attorney who represented the family of Trayvon Martin, a black teenager who was shot to death by a community watch volunteer in 2012.
Police in riot gear fired tear gas to disperse a crowd estimated in the hundreds gathered near a building that burned during Sunday night’s rioting, he said.

  • Two journalists covering the Michael Brown shooting case, Wesley Lowrey of The Washington Post and Ryan J. Reilly of The Huffington Post, reported that they were arrested and released by the Ferguson Police Department Wednesday night. Lowery and Reilly said they were detained after filming officers inside of a McDonald's and then not leaving fast enough when ordered out.

At 6:53 p.m. local time Lowery tweeted that police entered the McDonalds and tried to kick everyone out. About 45 minutes later he tweeted "was arrested."

Officers decided we weren't leaving McDonalds quickly enough, shouldn't have been taping them.

Both reporters said they were assaulted during their arrests:

Reilly called in to MSNBC's All In with Chris Hayes and described the arrest. An officer started counting Reilly down, then grabbed his belongings, forced them into his bag, and arrested him. According to Reilly the officer used his finger to create a pressure point in his neck and slammed him against a wall. "The worst part was he slammed my head against the glass purposefully on the way out of McDonald's and then sarcastically apologized for it," he said.

RELATED: A Visual Guide to Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton's Lackluster Hugging History

Matt Pearce at the Los Angeles Times said he spoke to the Ferguson police chief, who was shocked when he heard that two journalists had been arrested. "I told them to release them," he told Pearce, referring to the riot command. The chief said the two were arrested "probably by somebody who didn't know better."

Lowery and Reilly are among the many national journalists who have been reporting from Ferguson in the wake of the shooting death of Michael Brown by a police officer, and the riots and protests that followed. After their arrest, Christina Coleman of KSDK (an NBC affiliate) was hit with tear gas:

My face after tear gas. Stinging, eyes watering. I'm not getting out of this car. #ferguson #mikebrown pic.twitter.com/ALIVdhzlXa

    — Christina Coleman (@ChristinaKSDK) August 14, 2014
In the last few days reporters have said they were barred from entering the city. Reporters who have made it in have been tear gassed and threatened by police officers, alongside the residents of Ferguson. What reporters haven't received is any answers.

Detained, booked, given answers to no questions. Then just let out

    — Wesley Lowery (@WesleyLowery) August 14, 2014
And while this experience (being arrested, but released and unharmed) doesn't compare to the experience of many of the protesters, it adds to concerns from journalists that the Ferguson Police Department isn't committed to allowing reporters to do their jobs. In a statement released Wednesday night, National Association of Black Journalists President Bob Butler said the organization's members "call on — and fully expect — the authorities to investigate what appears to be a violation of the First Amendment and to hold the officers involved to account, if necessary."

Earlier today the police department and the city asked protesters not to meet after dark. The question now is what will happen to people who aren't journalists.

Update 12:20 a.m.: It isn't just journalists. St. Louis alderman Antonio French (@AntonioFrench) was also arrested during the protests, according to multiple reports.

Reilly and Lowery have also released more information about their arrests. Huffington Post released a statement saying the "police resembled soldiers more than officers." Lowery posted a first-person account on the Post website, complete with video of an officer (who does look like a soldier) hustling him out of the McDonald's.

“I hope you’re happy with yourself,” one officer told me. And I responded: “This story’s going to get out there. It’s going to be on the front page of The Washington Post tomorrow.”

And he said, “Yeah, well, you’re going to be in my jail cell tonight.”

Finally, there has been a lot of talk online about what politicians are going to do about it. Missouri Gov. Jay Nixon announced late in the evening that he is canceling his planned trip to the state fair tomorrow, to go to Ferguson instead.

STL County Police Chief Belmar: "We've done everything we can to demonstrate a remarkable amount of restraint." pic.twitter.com/97AcVPPZGK

The President, who is vacationing on Martha's Vineyard, has been briefed on the situation. However, he and his staff are taking heat for a statement, released in the heat of the evening, that gleefully describes the birthday party he attended with his wife, as well as Bill Clinton and Hillary Clinton. The "tone deaf" statement, which does not mention Ferguson or anything else unpleasant, ends, "The Obamas danced nearly every song. A good time was had by all."

  • Thousands of people across the country attended protest vigils Thursday for an unarmed black Missouri teenager fatally shot by a white police officer and other victims who organizers say died as a result of police brutality.

The vigils, observed in more than 90 cities as part of a National Moment of Silence, came days after the shooting death of 18-year-old Michael Brown and the death of a New York man caused by a police officer's chokehold.

In downtown St. Louis, in a tiny park near the Gateway Arch, several hundred people, seemingly an equal number whites and blacks, gathered in Brown's memory.

The site is a short drive from suburban Ferguson, where Brown was killed, stoking racial unrest. In Ferguson, two-thirds of the 21,000 residents are black and all but three of the 53 police officers are white.

The St. Louis gathering was peaceful in contrast with a night of looting and clashes between demonstrators and police in Ferguson earlier in the week.

The attendees included Brown's mother, Lesley McSpadden, who didn't address the crowd but waved, drawing applause as she wiped away tears.

The observance was among many staged nationwide, each with a minute of silence for Brown and others who died at the hands of police.

Bishop Elliott Coleman, of St. Louis' El Bethel Temple Church, said in opening the observance there that people were coming together "for this reason of healing."

"Realize there are tears in every city, tears in homes, tears in the eyes of young people, tears in the eyes of old people," Coleman said. "The tears need to be wiped away, and the hearts need to be healed."

In New York, thousands of people peacefully gathered in Manhattan's Times Square and Union Square, invoking the rallying cries "hands up, don't shoot" and "I can't breathe," alluding to the death of 43-year-old Eric Garner, who was arrested on Staten Island on suspicion of selling loose, untaxed cigarettes and was placed in an officer's chokehold.

Garner, who had asthma, can be heard on tape shouting "I can't breathe!" and died a short time later.

The police commissioner in New York has said officers will be retrained on the use of force. Police in Ferguson have said Brown was shot after an officer encountered him and another man on the street and one of the men pushed the officer into his squad car and physically assaulted him.

Antonia Moe, who attended the Union Square vigil with her 12-year-old son, said incidents like Brown's death have changed the way she talks to her son about being black.

"When things like this happen you kind of have to remember to remind him that some of the rules that apply to others don't necessary apply to you," she said.

In Orlando, Florida, about 15 miles outside the Sanford suburb where unarmed black teenager Trayvon Martin was shot and killed by neighborhood watch leader George Zimmerman in 2012, a multicultural crowd of about 100 people gathered in front of a park amphitheater.

One woman carried a sign that read: "No Justice, No Peace. We Stand With Ferguson." Another man's sign said: "Hands up. Don't Shoot! RIP Mike Brown."

In Chicago, hundreds of people gathered downtown at Daley Plaza, where chants of "No justice! No peace! No racist police!" were heard.

In Nevada, about 40 people gathered outside the federal courthouse in Reno, and dozens gathered in Seattle, holding up signs that read "Unite Against Racism" and "Solidarity With Ferguson."

  • Federal prosecutors said on Tuesday they are investigating the shooting death of a black man in the back of a Louisiana police car that had previously been ruled a ѕυιcιdє.

The family of Victor White III, 23, who died in March while handcuffed and in the custody of the Iberia Parish Sheriff's Office, has disputed a coroner's finding that he killed himself.

"This tragic incident deserves a full review of the evidence," Lafayette-based U.S. Attorney Stephanie Finley said in a statement. "Our objective is to discover the truth."

Benjamin Crump, attorney for the White family, said the incident is similar to the 2012 death in Arkansas of Chavis Carter, calling them both "Houdini Handcuff" cases, in reference to famed escape artist Harry Houdini.

Like White, Carter was shot while handcuffed in the back of a police car, with his death ruled a ѕυιcιdє.

The federal probe of White's death, which is being carried out by Finley's office together with the FBI and the U.S. Justice Department's Civil Rights Division, will "supplement, rather than supplant" an ongoing state police investigation into his death, Finley said.

"Once the investigation is complete, we will carefully review the results to decide if any prosecutable violations of federal criminal civil rights statutes occurred," she said.

White died in early March in Iberia Parish, about 100 miles west of New Orleans, after being stopped by police in connection with a fight, according to the Baton Rouge Advocate newspaper.

The Louisiana State Police initially said that White was shot in the back, the Advocate reported, while the subsequent coroner's report - which corroborated his death as a ѕυιcιdє - found he was shot in the chest.

The Louisiana State Police and the Iberia Parish coroner did not immediately return messages seeking comment.
