  • I watched a few Chosen episodes that I liked.
    But then I watched

Did not like it so put up a comment

'My first look at this episode and I did not like it. It depicts the Virgin Mary having a natural birth of a baby pushing in pain.. It was a supernatural birth, Jesus coming from Mary's womb miraculously, not naturally, without any such depiction shown in the film.'

  • St. Augustine of Hippo famously employed the analogy of the sun shining through glass to describe the mystery of Christ's birth from the Virgin Mary, emphasizing how the light passes through without breaking or tarnishing the glass—just as the Son of God was born without violating her virginity.

"For as the sun passes through glass, so the Son of God came forth from the womb of the virgin mother, leaving her still a virgin."
"But Peter and the apostles answering, said: We ought to obey God, rather than men." - Acts 5:29

The Highest Principle in the Church: "We are first of all under obedience to God, and only then under obedience to man" - Fr. Hesse

Absolutely wonderful description Stubern, thanks for that.

  • So the question in the OP refers to the pain of childbirth, not about whether Our Lady remained physically intact.

I for one believe wholeheartedly that Our Lady accepted the pain of childbirth, even though she was not subject to it IN JUSTICE.

Our Lord was not subject to suffering and death in justice either ... yet He accepted them anyway.  Our Lord and the Holy Famliy are depicted often in the Gospels submitting to the Law, e.g. circuмcision, "purification" (as Our Lady required anythign of the sort), and Scripture makes a point of repeatedly showing how Our Lord "fulfilled all justice".

Why?  Well, it's almost precisely because they were not subject to these things that they were meritorious toward our Redemption (with Our Lady being a Co-Redemptrix in this regard as well).

Now, I haven't watched the video, and have no intention of doing so, but if Our Lady is shown yelling, screaming, etc. ... now that would be highly objectionable, and I'm sure that Our Blessed Mother bore whatever sufferings she did accept with perfect equanimity.  Just stay away from the Prots in general, since they're always, even in more subtle wasy, attempting to make Our Lady out to be just some average Jane or Nancy.  There was some scenes in Gibon's movie that I strongly objected to, such as when he had Our Lady completely losing it when Our Lord, as a toddler, gently feel onto some dirt and straw from his height of about 1-2 feet above the ground, making her look like some maniacal Jewess in that scene.  Just awful.  And don't get me started on his choice of Our Lady for the next movie.  "Father" Nix on X there claims to be friens with Gibson, and Im pleased with him to ask Gibon to dump that filth who's being cast for the part of Our Lady, and I aslo asked +Vigano to do the same, since he's been in contact with Gibson, but I haven't heard a peep about either one doing so.  Nix in particular likes to namedrop about Gibson and undoubtedly has too much human respect and being in awe of friendship with some "start" to actually do the right thing and make the request.  He's a coward.  I simply will never watch that new movie, and I will not accept or tolerate Our Blessed Mother being denigrated this way.  I think Nix made some post about the Tuchonian docuмent about Co-Redemptrix denigrating Our Lady, and I told him, "speaking of denigrating Our Lady ... please tell Mr. Gibson to replace that woman who has been floated as playing the part of Our Lady".  Crickets.

  • Jesus was pretty illuminatingly "white", they love to depict him as a "brown".

  • Should we really expect anything from these producers other than error, heresy, and even objective blasphemy?

If someone offers you a non-Catholic bible you are suppose to "turn away in disgust."

How is watching a movie/show that is purported to be based on the Scriptures really any different?

Yes, yes I know that if someone who claims to be Christian goes to sit and read the Scriptures they would normally be assuming it is all true and good - the Revealed Word of God, etc.

    VS.

Watching a show/movie one may automatically approach it less critically and just think of it as "entertainment".

I am completely aware of that nuance  thank you.

What I am getting at is - WHAT DID YOU EXPECT other than heresy, error, blasphemy?

AND WHY would you expect anything different?

Not trying to pick a fight - just generally curious - if anyone wants to attempt to answer.

I have nothing else to say about it.

    Either way, thanks.

  • The show is really good. The only "problem" was a scene where Mary briefly mentioned pain while giving birth, but that's it.
