  • My sister wanted me to post this:

Just found this video yesterday, and thought you might want to pass it on to your forum. The video is of a Richard Weikart, who I believe is associated with the Discovery Institute (intelligent design people) as a fellow or something. The video is called "From Darwin to Hitler" and is a lecture given by Mr. Weikart around the material in his book by the same title. For those who haven't heard of the connection before, it should prove pretty interesting. I haven't watched it all yet, but... it should be pretty good.

    From Hitler to Darwin:

And if you want to do a post about darwinism vs. creationism or "intelligent design" here are some other very interesting resources for people.

    The Institute for Creation Research:
    http://www.icr.org/

I go to ICR a LOT, because they update pretty much daily (save for weekends), and you get just story after story after story of scientists out there finding things that just do not fit with darwinism or non-creationism, but which very clearly DO fit with Creationism and the Bible. It's a Christian site, from what I can tell, so they do actually point out how things mesh with the Bible, which is refreshing. But like with apologetics, if you don't have any ammo, it's tough to take on people who believe in the nonsense. The ICR is basically your daily ammo depot!

    Intelligent Design The Future:
    http://www.idthefuture.com/

This place is very audio-packed, and "provides listeners with the most current news and views on evolution and ID through brief interviews with key scientists and scholars developing the theory of ID, as well as insightful commentary from Discovery Institute senior fellows and staff on the scientific, educational and legal aspects of the debate."

    Coldwater Media:
    http://www.coldwatermedia.com/

Some nice videos on the subject and surrounding subjects.

Interesting-looking video that seems to be related, about the Galapogos islands where Darwin did his research:

    The Discovery Institute:

    Discovery Institute on Youtube:

  • With all due respect to the Creationists, I must disagree.

    To quote St. Augustine:

"Usually, even a non-Christian knows something about the earth, the heavens, and the other elements of this world, about the motion and orbit of the stars and even their size and relative positions, about the predictable eclipses of the sun and moon, the cycles of the years and the seasons, about the kinds of animals, shrubs, stones, and so forth, and this knowledge he hold to as being certain from reason and experience.

Now, it is a disgraceful and dangerous thing for an infidel [nonbeliever] to hear a Christian, presumably giving the meaning of Holy Scripture, talking nonsense on these topics; and we should take all means to prevent such an embarrassing situation, in which people show up vast ignorance in a Christian and laugh it to scorn. The shame is not so much that an ignorant individual is derided, but that people outside the household of faith think our sacred writers held such opinions, and, to the great loss of those for whose salvation we toil, the writers of our Scripture are criticized and rejected as unlearned men.

If they find a Christian mistaken in a field which they themselves know well and hear him maintaining his foolish opinions about our books, how are they going to believe those books in matters concerning the resurrection of the dead, the hope of eternal life, and the kingdom of heaven, when they think their pages are full of falsehoods and on facts which they themselves have learnt from experience and the light of reason?

Reckless and incompetent expounders of Holy Scripture bring untold trouble and sorrow on their wiser brethren when they are caught in one of their mischievous false opinions and are taken to task by those who are not bound by the authority of our sacred books.

For then, to defend their utterly foolish and obviously untrue statements, they [Christians] will try to call upon Holy Scripture for proof and even recite from memory many passages which they think support their position, although they understand neither what they say nor the things about which they make assertion."

  • One more little thing I'd like to add:

Nobody ever became a Christian because they were told the earth is 8,000 years old.

Probably the exact opposite would happen; indeed, their are people who have lost their faith over this, just as their are people who have lost their faith over "higher" Biblical criticism.  The Cosmos and Earth are not 10,000 or so years old, and there is nothing in Catholic Magisterial teaching that says that we have to believe otherwise.

With all due respect, there is nothing nonsensical, foolish, or untrue about holding the Orthodox interpretation of Genesis 1 as it does not contradict actual scientific facts and evidence. I think it would be more apt to apply the above quote from St. Augustine to the Christians who unfortunately want to twist the Scriptures to conform to the fallible hypotheses of man, such as an old earth, uniformitarianism or evolutionism, none of which, might I add, have ever been actually proven scientifically. All of them, however, were developed primarily by atheists with an obvious bias.

In reality, these so-called "scientific theories" are just presuppositions and world-views that you have to actually first believe in to find "evidence" for. This why the belief in these ideas have been ingrained into Western Culture; if you get everyone to firmly believe in them by declaring them "facts", any other explanation will be immediately objected to, doubted, or made fun of. There is far more evidence based on the original language of Genesis as well as for a literal six day creation and scientific evidence for a young-earth and catastrophism (as opposed to uniformitarianism).

Science has been redefined to include only naturalistic explanations. The evidence is so stacked against a purely naturalistic source for living things that redefining science seems to be the only way to get there.

Here's just one of the many examples which you can read about (or listen to/watch) online: http://www.halos.com/

  • As far as I am concerned, so what?!  Ray Comfort spends a lot of time bashing Darwinian evolution.  So what!  We can all agree that naturalistic materialism is philosophically absurd.  It is stupid.  We are not just collections of atoms having conversations with each other.

Yes, I agree. However, my point is that Christians who accept evolutionism and reject the plain meaning of Genesis are just trying to squeeze Genesis into a naturalistic, evolutionary mould.

I do not believe that science and faith contradict each other; rather, I think that science is irrelevant to faith.  As the Church never declared the Creation account as having had occurred in six, 24-hour days, we are, I believe, free to accept an immense age for the Universe.
