Rash of weekend violence in Chicago leaves 17 shot, 3 dead
It was another bloody weekend in Chicago, with 17 people shot and three left dead due to gun violence from Friday to Saturday in the notoriously dangerous city, Breitbart reports.
Despite the authoritarian gun control policies put in place by Chicago’s liberal leadership, it remains one of America’s most dangerous cities.
Bloody weekend in Chicago
Chicago is a Democrat-controlled city, and its gun control policies only make it more dangerous for citizens who have no other options to protect themselves.
One of the weekend’s fatal shootings involved an alley
encounter in which one man shot another man multiple times. The suspect remains at large, according to NBC affiliate WMAQ.
In another incident, a woman was shot several times in her car but was able to drive herself to a hospital. Her assailant has yet to be identified.
Epidemic of violence
Violent weekends across Chicagoland are a tragically common occurrence. As recently as April 19th, Breitbart
reported that 14 people had been shot over the preceding weekend.
Even the coronavirus pandemic and the resulting social distancing protocols that have significantly altered life in the city have done
little to slow the violence.
Many in Chicago’s more dangerous areas are
ignoring stay-at-home orders, a fact which could explain why the violence hasn’t fallen as much as would have been expected with the precautionary measures in place.
Chicago in particular and Illinois as a whole are characterized by some of the strictest gun control laws in the nation. Those regulations don’t seem to be
improving the situation and are leaving citizens with no way to protect themselves from violence.
Tragedies continue to mount
Besides the gun violence in Chicago, the city is also dealing with the illness and devastation wrought by COVID-19.
The state of Illinois has over
65,000 cases of coronavirus, with a large proportion of those concentrated in Chicago, adding another crisis to a city already facing a host of seemingly intractable woes.
Chicago’s problems won’t be solved until its leaders address the underlying causes of crime in its core. Until then, weekends such as the one that just passed will almost certainly remain the norm, and the toll of preventable deaths will continue to climb.
