Bishop Thomas Paprocki of Springfield, Illinois has announced that he will conduct prayers of exorcism at the city’s cathedral on November 20, the date when Illinois Governor Pat Quinn will sign into law a bill recognizing same-sex marriage.

In a statement released by the Springfield diocese, Bishop Paprocki explained that the ritual of exorcism is designed not only for cases of demonic possession, but also for circuмstances when the work of the devil is evident in public activities “and in various forms of opposition to and persecution of the Church.”

Quoting Pope Francis, from the days when he led a fight against same-sex marriage as Archbishop of Buenos Aires, the bishop said that the redefinition of marriage is “a move of the father of lies, who wishes to confuse and deceive the children of God.” Accepting ɧoɱosɛҳųαƖ unions as equivalent to marriage, Bishop Paprocki said—again quoting then-Cardinal Bergoglio—entails “the total rejection of God’s law engrave in our hearts.”

Bishop Paprocki said it was “scandalous” that many Catholic politicians had supported the legislation redefining marriage. He said that “politicians who supported the measure are “morally complicit as cooperators in facilitating this grave sin.”

I thank Neil for recalling the Buchanan lynching that followed the 1996 New Hampshire primary victory. It was a template for why America could and would, by 2008, ultimately disappear as a serious political and economical power.

Coming off the GOP's stunning 1994 House recapture, "conservatives" (which included yours truly at the time) were on a tear. We expected success at every turn. We had the Klintonovich collective on the run and the "people" were experiencing the "reawakening" of a new Reaganesque consciousness, ripe with hope for gutting gub'mint and the return of the "citizen legislator."

Pat was going to go all the way and on January 20, 1997, immediately after taking the oath of office, turn to the man he had defeated and place him and his loveless bride, Bruno, under arrest. After which high comedy, he'd commandeer a DC Police car and drive down and arrest the first abortionist he could find at work in a local clinic.

Five days later, appeared ABC's infamous "log cabin" background with David Brinkley and George Will, foreground.

At first, Will appeared dyspeptic or malarial. A fan (until that morning), I was actually concerned for the health of one of my favorite columnists. Having spent my career working hard at "dressing British, looking Irish (not hard when you have relatives in County Cork) and thinking Yiddish", I was particularly keen on such micro-details and there was something definitely wrong with Ol' George. Even Brinkley, although not surprisingly, looked as if he had the vapors, as well.

Shortly, once Will had made his first strafing run on Buchanan, I began to develop symptoms of what Evelyn Waugh once described as a form of "African tummy" myself.

What I witnessed had no immediate explanation!

It was like watching a movie in which John Wayne morphed into an Indian scout and took to scalping Maureen O'Hara - live and in color!

That was the day I decided to burn my GOP membership card and use George Will editorials as wicks to light my smokes.

It was also the day I had my second "awakening" of the year - the GOP must be destroyed down to the subatomic particle level before any meaningful change will, if ever, come about in American government.

Until Bp. Paprocki also realizes that the Dolanites and other stalactites that line the cave in which the USCCCP Comintern hibernates are, to him, what George Will once was to Pat Buchanan, he will be in for a frightful ride.

Neil, Anthony thank you for the refresher. I remember that George Will sure did a number on Pat at the time calling him a nαzι, socialist, fringe-nut, and dangerous fool (luckily George Will is near the end of his life and his libertarian columns, unluckily Pat is also near the end of his life, and it seems no one is going to take up his mantle as the last true conservative). But yes the Republican Establishment was scared to death of a candidate that actually wouldn't have listened to Wall Street, the Jєωιѕн lobbies, and was a populist.

Anyway back on topic, I think it shows just how modernist this Vatican II Church is, in that they refuse to acknowledge there can be actual spirits in this world (yes demons) who actually want to hurt us and inflict harm and pain on us as it conflicts with their view of "Are-You-Running-with-Me-Jesus" brand of Christianity.

It depends on what you're talking about since the original meaning of that figure of speech meant that God was not a judgemental God but a loving God and that Hell was only a metaphor.

Bishop Paprocki had said that the exorcism was appropriate because the approval of ɧoɱosɛҳųαƖ marriage showed a radical moral disorientation in society. “I’m not saying that anyone involved in the redefinition of marriage is possessed buy the devil,” he said, “but all of us are certainly subject to the devil’s evil influences and in need of protection and deliverance from evil.”

The bishop explained that he was performing a “minor” exorcism, as opposed to the “major” ritual that is used in cases of demonic possession. During the ceremony, he said that politicians had voted in favor of same-sex marriage were “morally complicit” in a grave evil.
