  • MICHIGAN DEPT OF AGRI FORCES FARMER TO DUMP 248 GALLONS OF ORGANIC MILK AND BREAK 1200 FREE RANGE EGGS
Posted by: Daisy Luther | on July 22, 2014

While Americans in the nearby city of Detroit face life in third world conditions, unable to even afford running water,  the state of Michigan decided to direct its resources towards cracking down on a small food co-op in Standish for having the utter audacity to provide milk, butter, cream and eggs to people who bought shares in the organic dairy.

The Michigan Department of Agriculture must be so proud of their deeds, after they forced Joe and Brenda Golimbieski, the owners of  Hill High Dairy and Jenny Samuelson, the owner of My Family Co-op, to dump out 248 gallons of milk, to break 100 dozen eggs, and to destroy an undisclosed amount of fresh cream, butter and cheese.

According to a post on the Hill High Dairy page on Facebook, the agents from the MDA stood over the family, watching as the food was destroyed.

100 dozen eggs… Each egg had to be broken. 248 gallons dumped in a sprayer that had to be witnessed by MDA being dumped and sprayed on the field.

Here are pictures of the destruction of this food from Hill High Dairy page – if you’re on Facebook, please go and give them a “like” to show your support.

According to the owners of the dairy, the MDA threatened to arrest the co-op owner, Jenny Samuelson,  for “selling food without a license.” However, the farm is a co-op, where people must buy shares. The MDA, however, said that the co-op contracts were invalid, and therefore, instead of being shared, the food was being sold. Because co-op members had paid for their shares, technically the MDA stole food that belonged not just to the Golimbieski family, but to every single member of that co-op.

    One member wrote angrily:

This is such a shame! I paid for these products and this is what happened!!!! They are all criminals!!! Government stealing all our food! I paid just so that Jenny and the farmers didn’t have to carry the burden all on their own!!!! A crying shame. Shame on Michigans Department of Agriculture! Criminals everyone on u!!!!

Looking at the website and Facebook page, all I see are happy, well-treated animals, actually roaming around in fields.  How is it that Michigan approves of the horrific conditions in its state’s factory farms, where animals are tortured, drugged, and crammed into cages for the entirety of their miserable lives, but raising animals humanely and naturally is considered “dangerous”?

What is wrong with the world when REAL farming is treated like a crime and fresh food is treated like the crystal meth?

I’ll tell you what’s wrong – big corporations do not want us to have options. They want a monopoly and they are working hard to destroy our other choices. Big Agri clearly has many good friends in the Michigan Department of Agriculture. Clearly the “Department of Agriculture” really means the “Department of Big Agri”. They aren’t there to support small farmers or people who wish to be self-sufficient. They are there to lock down the market for corporate farms. (Like Dean Foods, who also owns Horizon Organics – read more about the way this company does business - they own up to 90% of the corporate milk business in the state, according to an article on The Complete Patient )

David Gumpert, a raw milk advocate and owner of the site The Complete Patient wrote:

The government-sponsored dump of nearly $5,000 of milk, eggs, butter, and cream from Michigan’s My Family Co-Op yesterday carried a very clear and powerful political message to all Americans: We control your food and we don’t like you buying your food outside the corporate food system. Every now and then, we are going to remind you of what bad children you are being by taking your food and throwing it in the garbage. In fact, we are going to do more than remind you, we are going to completely humiliate you by preventing you from even feeding it to farm animals and instead forcing it to be disposed of in a landfill or dumpster…

…If you think I am exaggerating the intent of what is going on here, ask yourself this question: When was the last time you saw government agents seize and condemn food from a place like Foster Farms or Taco Bell or Del Monte or Kellogg’s or Trade Joe’s when their food has been found to contain pathogens, or made people sick? There’s been not even a suggestion that food at My Family Co-Op contained pathogens or made anyone sick. (Read the rest of Mr. Gumpert’s excellent essay on the subject)

The state of Michigan appears in the news again and again for infringing upon the liberty of its residents to choose what they wish to consume. Recently, they took away the “right to farm” from ordinary people, rescinding a law that had been on the books for years. Before that, Michigan’s Department of Natural Resources destroyed a farmer’s heritage pigs, calling them an “invasive species.”

This horrible visual of a farmer destroying fresh food while an “agent” stands over him to make certain that it’s inedible will stick with me. It’s like a scene from a movie, where the vanquishing enemy goes “scorched earth” on the denizens of the area they have conquered, ruining their crops, stealing their food stores, and most of all, making certain that they know they’ve been defeated.

Except it’s not a movie. It’s life in America. The barbarians are members of the government, and it is our own farms that are under siege.

  • America stopped being free when the United States borrowed
Trillion dollars from a communist country.  And NAFTA

These were the same tactics used during the great Famine in
    Ireland.

May God bless you and keep you

  • I’ll play a bit of the “devil’s advocate” …

I can’t quickly find enough information to have a really informed opinion on the this case, but I have enough to think there is a LOT of hyperbole in the reactions from the various quarters.

I grew up on an irrigated crop farm (alfalfa hay, sugar beets, certified clover seed, green and dry beans).  We had a large garden and mom canned or froze most of our winter provisions.  We had chickens, hogs, family milk cows, and fed weaned beef calves on the crop residues over the winter.  I had 2 – 3 Jersey cows for my 4-H and FFA projects and sold raw milk to the neighbors.  As kids watching television we had to take turns cranking the hand butter churn.  I have a degree in Animal Science and currently work on a dairy farm.

To address a side topic, there is substantial research (replicable, verifiable, peer reviewed) from numerous independent sources, conducted by people actually trained in bacteriology and food science that shows that pasteurization does no harm to the nutrient value of milk, effectively destroys harmful pathogens that potential can contaminate milk on its way from the teat end to the drinking glass, and it vastly improves shelf life.  If I had my own cows I would have a home pasteurization unit, even though I grew up on raw milk.  Every year, about 48 million people, roughly one in six in the United States, get sick from eating contaminated food http://www.cdc.gov/features/dsfoodborneoutbreaks.

With that said, if someone wants to think that “raw”, or “organic”, or whatever is better, that is certainly their prerogative.

Also, here is a state by state review of raw milk regulation http://www.farmtoconsumer.org/raw_milk_map.htm

Regarding the case at hand, Michigan allows herd share sale of raw milk by regulation, as noted above.  From what information is available, it appears the farm went into this business without doing their due diligence and research regarding the requirements for being in this business as a commercial enterprise.  They got caught.  They have the opportunity to align things to be in compliance and news reports indicates that this is what they are doing.

I’m somehow missing how this is a “freedom” issue?

  • Moneil,

To further expand on your point regarding the taste of milk, even though I have no experience in farming, I think that the time delay between the "teat" and the grocery store is the real cause of hte deterioration in taste.

My wife grows tomatoes in our backyard and fresh off the vine they are crazy good but store bought ones lack the flavor.

  • American long since stopped being a free country when our leadership
accepted the United Nations agendas. Such as toxic substances such
as fluoride in the water in which does nothing for the teeth but gradually
poisons the body causing early illness and death. Countries that have
band fluoride, the population is much more healthy and also much
more intelligent. The Liberals in the 1950's used slogans such as
right wing conspiracy to those opposed fluoride without a fair
argument, hearing both sides. The Liberals promoted the death
culture. This is why Obamacare  has death panels despite the
denial of the Liberals.  It is because of Liberals that the government
lies all the time, for the Liberal the agenda is far more important.
Also bring in so called third world immigrants to steal the jobs of
the native born Americans and you are not allowed to criticizes
illegal immigration in fear of being called a racist, and a hater.
These immigrants are allowed to change our culture in which
people of different backgrounds and races are in constant at each
others throats. This is happening in the countries of the EU, Canada,
Australia, and New Zealand.  The purpose is to make a more
compliant population that does what the governments agenda is.
Such as unjust wars that causes the deaths of millions of innocent
people, men women and children.  The Liberals it is always war
against the innocent. That explains today's Palestine. The Jєωs
are the only ones allowed to be racist to the core even against
Jєωs of a darker and black race. A Jєωιѕн official was quoted
that Israel is for the "White Man". Did you hear any criticism
from the media, no you did not. Only from the alternative news
such as David Duke who quotes from Jєωιѕн Sources.  The
reason is because America is not a free country is because the
Jєωs want it that way.   Do not forget that the Jєωs were behind
the Russian Revolution of 1917 in which many Christian Churches
were destroyed, and not a single Jєωιѕн ѕуηαgσgυє was touched.

I’m somehow missing how this is a “freedom” issue?

Since when does the government have a right to tell us what we can or cannot eat?

It's none of their _____ business!

We're adults, not children. We have a God-given right to grow and eat our own food.

The government needs to stick to its proper role (national defense, international treaties, etc.) and keep its nose where it belongs.

I don't care if it's good, bad, or in-between. I have free will and a right to exercise it. If I am physically hindered from exercising my free will, it is called slavery and/or living in a dystopian dictatorship.

And I'll give you another clue:

There's a massive red line that should never be crossed; when this line is crossed it should set off alarm bells from one end of the USA to the other. That red line is: When the government watches over your shoulder as perfectly good food is confiscated or destroyed.

The Soviets confiscated all the food, seeds, and farm equipment in Ukraine and caused the starvation death of MILLIONS. That's the kind of evil we're dealing with here.

It's a kind of ultimate evil, going for the jugular of a population: food. Everyone needs food. Why do they want us to be dependent on Wal-mart for our food? The reason can't be an upright one.

  • I think we stopped being "free" when the 13th Amendment was overwritten and no one in Congress stopped it.  This action showed how easy it is for those with an agenda to manipulate politicians, and they have been manipulating ever since.

The original 13th prohibited Titles of Nobility, the "new" one freed the slaves.  Research the TON amendment for more information.

Also research the Act of 1871.  It was another important milestone in our long march toward tyranny.

I do not disagree with the above.  However this case isn’t about someone growing and eating their own food.  It is about a commercial enterprise (albeit a small family farm marketing directly to the consumer, the better way, in my opinion) producing food for other people to consume as a profit enterprise.

From the link I posted http://www.farmtoconsumer.org/raw_milk_map.htm I was surprised that only 10 states allow the retail sale of raw milk.  I live in one of those, WA, and just 9 miles from Moscow, ID, where I can by locally produced raw Jersey milk whenever I want at the Moscow Food Co-op.  After a lifetime working with dairy products and with university level study of bacteriology and food science I personally don’t consume dairy products unless they have been heat treated, just common sense in my book, but to each their own.  However I am unaware of any state that wouldn’t allow you to own your own cow, milk it, and consume the milk or related products in the raw form in your own home.  Anyone can raise up a calf out of that cow (or buy a calf), or keep a hog, or a lamb, or a goat, or rabbits, call the local butcher and have it cut and wrapped to your specification for one’s own personal consumption.  Various governmental entities actively encourage this.  Here are links from the USDA http://afsic.nal.usda.gov/farms-and-community/urban-agriculture and the UN Food and Agriculture Organization http://www.fao.org/urban-agriculture/en.  Saturday’s when I go to the Farmers Market in either Pasco, WA or Moscow ID the County Cooperative Extension Service (the USDA in cooperation with the state’s Land Grant University) has an information table with trained staff and printed information on growing and preserving one’s own food.

That is not what this case is about.

Well, since you sound like an authority, I'd better chime in as well.

I attended S.T.A.S. for 3 1/2 years, and they never bought store milk. We drank milk every day, plus lots of it was used in cooking -- all of which came from the cows on the property. No pasteurization, no homogenization. We just stored it in the refrigerator and when it started to go bad, we'd dump it into the pig slop bucket.

But it wasn't just 1 man -- it was about 80 or more. All the priests (about 8) plus 50 - 80 seminarians and brothers. That's a lot of people to NOT get sick over 3 1/2 years time, consuming raw milk on a daily basis.

I don't choose to believe this or that website or individual; I'm believing my own first-hand experience.

I've never lived in WA so it may be an exception but having lived in 5 states I can testify that most cities/counties have numerous regulations that prohibit the keeping of "livestock", so most "anyone" actually cannot raise his/her own food.  Even gardens are limited by some cities.  The number and extent of "regulations" in this country that relate to food is unbelievable.

We really need to accelerate the back-to-the land movement.  I have no idea how that can be accomplished though as rural areas offer little in the way of employment and good land is very expensive.  Even then Uncle Sam can roll in and restrict the use of your land.  I have a vague memory of a family east of the Mississippi who were told they could not make improvements on their property because it had some "protected" lizard, or snake, or gnat or something.

I fear that in the future food and its production may well be used as a weapon to control the masses in one way or another, although I pray I am wrong.

    Marsha

p.s.  is the system for the National Animal Identification and Tracking (NAIT aka NAIS) up and running?  I remember it being proposed years ago.
