Adam and Eve

  • Hi,

I am in a discussion with a JW and she says that God did not know that Adam and Eve would be disobedient. She said that if He knew that He probably would have not created them. She also said that God could have known if He wanted to but he chose not to know.  Sounds circular to me.  If God didn't know then he would have had to scramble to find a savior for us.

I told her that God knew from the beginning that they would sin for the simple fact that he IS God.

Is there any Catholic teaching on the subject?

    Thanks

  • Baltimore Catechism:

    18. Q. Does God know all things?
    A. God knows all things, even our most secret thoughts, words, and actions.

  • I would tell her exactly what TKGS said, God is all-knowing.  If he IS'NT all-knowing then he isn't God, just an ignorant disembodied spirit.

  • God knew that Adam and Eve would be disobedient and his love for us is so great that he created them anyway.

Of course God knew Adam and Eve would be disobedient.

  • But God also knew Our Lady would be obedient.

Before you can debate the omniscience of God, please answer some much simpler questions:  What is 9 divided by Zero?  What is the square root of -1? What is the set of all sets.  If everything I say is a lie then what happens if I say I am lying.  Bottom line:  One cannot use reason to discern the actions of God because the actions of God transcend our reason.  You can no more know the mind of God than a Border Collie could dam the Mississippi.

Our Lady of Fatima, pray for us, you are our only hope.

  • Although we certainly cannot know completely the "mind" of God, He has revealed to us as much as He wants us to know of his mind.  He has given us scripture and tradition so to some extent we can know the mind of God.
