  • The Ontario English Catholic Teachers Association is sending a delegation to participate in the WorldPride 2014 Parade in Toronto—prompting criticism from Cardinal Thomas Collins.

“I am always inspired by the thousands of Catholic teachers in classrooms throughout Ontario who know their Catholic faith, and whose faith shapes the loving way in which they care for their students, especially any who are facing personal struggles,” said the Toronto cardinal, as quoted by the Catholic Register.

“OECTA, however, is not the Catholic teachers; it is a union,” he added. “Its competence is limited to collective bargaining, and the services any union provides to its members. When it goes beyond those areas, it can easily go wrong, as it has in the decision of the OECTA delegates to participate in this event. This decision shows that they and the OECTA leadership have an inadequate and mistaken understanding of their faith.”

“The bishops are not happy that we are in the parade,” said James Ryan, the president of the teachers’ union, as quoted by the Catholic Register. “It is not an acceptance or an approval of some of the peripheral groups that might join that parade, such as the nudists or anything like that. We support the Church’s teachings on chastity and we support the Church’s teachings on all issues.”

  • Archbishop Alfredo Zecca of Tucuмan, Argentina, said the Church does not tire of proclaiming the Gospel of Life and of denouncing the culture of death that eliminates the most innocent and defenseless.

“Christ’s resurrection is also our resurrection and gives us the grace to live as ‘new men,’ as ‘risen ones.’ Our new mission ought to necessarily follow our new being; sin gives way to grace, darkness to light, death to life,” Archbishop Zecca said in his Easter message.

This new mission and new being must be made manifest concretely in daily life, he explained, “and this inevitably raises questions: Can the Church remain silent amidst the malicious attempt to once again institute ‘the culture of death’?”

“Can we Argentineans boast of being pioneers in the defense of human rights when we don’t respect the most basic of them all: human life, which is sacred and inviolable from conception to natural death?” he asked.

“Faithful to the Lord’s command, the Church will never tire of proclaiming the Gospel of Life and of denouncing, with the Gospel and natural law, every attempt to legally justify death, any death, but above all, that of the most innocent: the unborn child,” the archbishop stressed.

“During this Easter may God help us to reflect as Christians and citizens, especially those in positions of responsibility, and give us the courage to confront these challenges together,” he said.

  • Why doesn't he threaten them with excommunication? I'll tell you why. Most bishops are clones of Paul VI when it comes to relations with the world.

This article on Paul VI is an autobiography of almost every bishop in the Church today. http://www.cfnews.org/page10/page83/paul_vi_beatified.html

The Cardinal may have done good things but he still needs our prayers, especially from those in his diocese.

In the case of the teachers union it is really a secular association. It wouldn't do any good to threaten them with excommunication.   OECTA, however, is not the Catholic teachers; it is a union,” he added. “Its competence is limited to collective bargaining, and the services any union provides to its members. When it goes beyond those areas, it can easily go wrong, as it has in the decision of the OECTA delegates to participate in this event. in the case of Argentina. Pope Francis when he was bishop of Buenos Aires did just that. He said that any lawmaker who voted for abortion should consider himself excommunicated.

Is that why Biden and Peℓσѕι had to attend Frank's inaugural "mass" and receive "communion" in disguise?

I think that they were able to recieve communion because the Europeans didn't know who they were and that they were told not to recieve Communion.

  • The bishops of Northern Ireland have urged legislators to reject a bill that would legalize same-sex marriage.

“We ask you to reaffirm the unique value to children and society of the mutual and complementary roles of a mother and father, committed to a loving and life-long relationship to each other in marriage,” the bishops said in their open letter. “We ask you promote the value of children being brought up, where possible and in their best interests, by their biological parents.”

“We ask you not to undermine the principle of equality by applying it inappropriately to two fundamentally different types of relationship,” the bishops continued. “We ask you to strengthen and support marriage between a woman and a man as a unique and highly valued institution of vital importance to the good of society. We therefore appeal to you to reject the forthcoming motion on what the motion describes, inappropriately, as ‘Marriage Equality.’”

  • The Catholic bishops of Papua New Guinea have issued a public warning against “dangerous trends” toward acceptance of abortion and sterilization.

In an open letter to government leaders, the bishops said that their relationship with the state has always been based on mutual respect, and pointed to Church-state cooperation in the fields of health, education, and social services. However, the bishops said that they are compelled to speak out on moral issues, as they have spoken in the past in opposition to capital punishment.

In that context, the bishops remarked that the country’s leaders “face great pressure”—including pressure from outside the country—to end the ban on abortion in Papua New Guinea. “We pray that our leaders will never bow to this temptation,” they write.

The bishops go on to decry the “political ideology that links development with population control,” and the willingness to invite organizations to “temporarily sterilize great numbers of women” in order to slow population growth. That approach ignores the welfare of women, the bishops write, and fails to recognize the rich resources of the country.

  • A Romanian bishop who was imprisoned, tortured, and killed by the post-World War II Communist regime was beatified as a martyr on May 17.

Cardinal Angelo Amato, prefect of the Congregation for the Causes of Saints, presided at the beatification of Anton Durcovici (1888-1951), which took place in Iasi, a city of 300,000 in northeastern Romania. Nine O’Clock, a Romanian newspaper, reported that 20,000 people, including the nation’s prime minister, filled the soccer stadium where the beatification occurred.

Following his ordination to the priesthood, Blessed Anton Durcovici served as a seminary professor and rector for nearly two dozen years. He was consecrated bishop of Iasi in 1948.

The following year, he was abducted by the secret police and imprisoned for two years. Pope Francis noted at the conclusion of his May 18 Regina Caeli address that the “zealous and courageous pastor was persecuted by the Romanian Communist regime and died in prison, died of hunger and thirst.”

  • Bishop Michael Barber of Oakland, California, who has been roundly criticized for including a code of personal conduct in contracts for Catholic-school teachers, defended his policy in an interview with the National Catholic Register.

Bishop Barber, who described himself as a “career classroom teacher,” said that purpose of the revised contracts was to “set an expectation.” He explained: “Every teacher is a role model for the students, whether they are teaching P.E. or math. The classroom is their pulpit, and they will help form their students as young adults.”

Rejecting the idea that his policy was a form of interference in teachers’ private lives, the bishop said:

What you do in your private life is between you and God. But what you do in your private life that becomes public — either because you put something on Facebook or let all the kids know about it in class —becomes a source of scandal, and it directly affects your responsibilities as a teacher.
The broader purpose of the new policy, the bishop said, was to underline the Catholic identity of parochial schools. “When things drift, alternative visions replace Catholic identity,” he said. When a clear Catholic identity is lacking, he remarked, the result is an “untenable situation” in which individuals feel free to set their own rules. He reported that the controversy over his new policies had been “spurred by a few teachers and some parents who are not in agreement with most teachings of the Church.”

Bishop Barber, a Navy chaplain, also revealed to the Register that he has “kept my commission active” and is using his vacation days to fulfill his military obligations.

  • Archbishop Sebastian Shaw of Lahore, Pakistan’s 2nd-largest city, led over 1,500 Catholics in a protest of the provincial government’s seizure of the site of a Catholic school.

The June 15 protest took place at the gates of the governor’s home.

“The seizure is the focus of an intricate story where there are the interests of politicians, shady plots and real estate speculation that have stolen ten large properties belonging to Christians, such as churches, schools, cemeteries, and hospitals in Punjab,” the Fides news service reported.

In its coverage of the incident, the Pakistan Christian Post describe Punjab’s government as “a big land mafia … hungry, lusty, and gangsters, who have grabbed over ten big Christian properties.”
