  • The 1st January will mark the 60th anniversary of the death of Seán South. He was killed by the English police in 1957. If he were alive today he would be in his late 80s and I firmly believe he would be a resistor.

In his native Limerick he established a branch of Maria Duce which was founded by the 'pure saint' Father Denis Fahey. South was active in the Legion of Mary.

He wrote to the local newspapers outlining the Jєωιѕн/Communist influence and control of Hollywood and society in general.

Seán South understood the question of money and addressed economics according to the social teachings of the church. All in all a great man. Fergal O'Hanlon, who was killed with him was also a deeply religious youth.

Seán South is an example to us all. I was able to pray at his grave yesterday. I shall share a few photographs.

Young people particularly Catholic youth here in Ireland and around the world should follow the example of Seán South.  A real Catholic patriot.

  • The grave of Seán Sabhat (Seán South) in Mount St Lawrence Cemetery in Limerick city. The grave is in the Republican plot.

Sean South: Why do people commemorate this lunatic?

This is not a criticism of the IRA's border campaign of 1956-62 but rather a personnal attack on Sean South. The IRA did have progressive individuals within their organisation at this time but South was certainly not one of them.

Sean South was a backward catholic reactionary. He was a member of the extremist Maria Duce orgainisation which campaigned for Ireland to become a catholic theocracy. Even the catholic church of the time was embarassed by their fundamentalism. He also campaigned for heavier censorship so that the youth would not be exposed to external opinions. In the early 50s he took part in many pogroms against trade unionists and communists as he believed them to be godless.

Sean South symbolises everything that was wrong with Ireland in the 1950s. All progressive republicans should come out and condemn him as a backwards idiot rather than sing songs about him.
