Those are ridiculous names.  The relative priority of the most popular names is also disturbing.

    Noah at number 4?

John and Mary were the most popular names of the 1890s.

Mary remained the most popular girls name until Vatican II.  John number one until the 20s and remained in the top 5 until the 1970s.

John and Mary are my parents names.

What's also disturbing is that my best friend named his son Jacob.  He almost named his girl Isabella.

Better than other choices on the list but it shows you how conformist people are.

  • Jacob and Noah and Mason dominating doesn't say good things about the future.  As well as the weird and non-Christian last name first names.

Not that the name Jacob and Noah are bad names, but it makes you wonder if these things are really spontaneous.

It's most popular to be named after the patriach Israel.

    Hmmmm.

  • John and Mary were the names of the two people who were closest to Our Lord, who were at the foot of the cross.

The switch to Jacob and Sophia is ominous.

  • I hope it's not just popular because of pop culture, but I like the name Isabella.  And I'd like to see Isabella the Catholic's cause re-opened.  Of course that's not very likely given that she's known for having expelled the Jєωs from her lands.

There is nothing wrong with many of the names.  The motivations, however, must be questioned.  As well as the relative priority.

I just looked it up, Isabella is the main character of the vampire "literature" Twilight.

  • William and Liam are good Catholic names.  I wonder if the name Mason has an etymology going back to stone mason.  Mind you, I wouldn't name my son after an occupation OR a secret society, just wondering.

One thing that sticks out to me is that many of these names are very Pagan sounding.  Whether they actually are or aren't, I don't know.

To all, friends and foes alike, give that serious attention which does not misrepresent any opinion, does not distort any statement, does not mutilate any quotation. We need not fear to serve the cause of Christ less efficiently by putting on His spirit". (Vermeersch, 1913).

  • I never heard of anyone with the first name Liam until the 90s.

William is certainly a fine name, it was my great grandfather's name.

I thought Bill was the shortened version of William.

Liam is an old Irish name.  I think it is actually derivative of an older form of "William."

And yes, Bill is short for William.  I always thought that was odd.

That may be but that's not why is sounds normal to you.

It only seems odd because no one goes by Bill anymore.

    Which is stupid.

  • I didn't say Liam sounded normal to me, I said it sounded Catholic.   :smirk:
