St. Augustine and Calvinism (http://www.orestesbrownson.org/st.-augustine-and-calvinism-bqr-for-july-1863-what-the-catholic-church-teaches-about-the-damned.html)
I have uploaded this article written by Orestes Augustus Brownson in July of 1863 on the the topic of St. Augustine and Calvinism. He broaches the topic of the "Fires of Hell" as well as the fate of the "infants who die unbaptized." I will not elaborate on Brownson as you are free to read the article for yourself. It is a good Lenten meditation on hell.

I've looked closely at St. Augustine's teaching on the eternal suffering of infants who die without baptism, and agree wholeheartedly with Brownson that he has gotten a bad rep on that score, and find this an accurate summary of A's view:
Its eternal separation from God as the chief good, as we have already said, involved in the mind of St. Augustine the necessity of suffering.
Nothing more, nothing less. There is no radical change in doctrine between St. Augustine and St. Thomas. Both agree that such an infant is separated from God, and endures no other punishment. That St. Augustine calls such a separation "suffering," and St. Thomas doesn't describe it as suffering, doesn't change the fact that the they regard the state of these infants the same: Augustine does not impute to the infant any "suffering" beyond the separation, which St. Thomas also acknowledges.
I'll add the quote to the thread I started to look at this aspect of St. Augustine's teaching.
Thanks for posting.

Hebert, I am not sure if you have read the very stuff which you have posted. But there is heretical nonsense on this website unfortunately; and this is the case with most "Catholic websites." Fr. Doyle, in his Q and A session ("Believe it; there is an actual literal hell"), says that non-Catholics can go to Purgatory, and this is heretical rubbish. Fr. Doyle, like just about every priest in America, is scared to say that there is no salvation outside the Church. He does not want to tell Cindy, "Well Cindy, I am sorry, only good Catholics go to heaven." This is a defined doctrine that one must be a Catholic if he wants to be saved.
Fr. Doyle quotes the New Catechism of the Catholic Church, a docuмent which is riddled with heresies. In the article he tells the enquirer, "Anyone who dies in the friendship of God goes to Purgatory." What he implies is that one can be a friend of God while remaining outside the Church, and this is heretical drivel.
