I dug up this article written by Isabel Boyer, a writer for the newspaper in Indianapolis, titled "Conformist Will Lose Soul: Rebel Priest." The article mentions that Fr. Wathen was one of only twelve priests in America still celebrating the Latin Mass, as she says, "among nearly 12 Catholic priests over the country who still celebrate the traditional way in Latin." The newspaper clipping is not dated, but I am guessing it is the very early 70's, since the SSPX is not even mentioned in the article.
I quote the article thus:
"People conforming to the 'new religion' will lose their souls, says Fr. Wathen, 'Since the death of the great Pope Pius XII, the Church has been taken over by malicious infiltrators, sworn enemies of the Triune God, insanely determined to destroy his Church...a week hardly passes that from the Vatican another Apostolic Constitution does not come forth, ushering in another 'new arrangement,' another 'new approach'...The pattern is always the same, in the guise of a "refocusing,' an 'updating,' a 'revision,' another sacramental rite or devotional practice or venerable custom is discarded and in its place is installed a crisp new bureaucratic fabrication...By now so many substitutions have been made that anyone should be able to perceive that the much-vaunted updating of the Church is really the installation of a 'new religion,' an anti-religion and a bogus Catholicism."
I uploaded a pic of the article.
