  • I thought that the Church teaches we can never do an evil to bring about a good. But what about docuмent "Vademecuм for Confessors Concerning the Morality of Conjugal Life" that was issued by the Pontifical Council for the Family which says it is not a sin for a Catholic spouse to give into contraception use if the non-Catholic spouse insists on using it?

In 1997, the Pontifical Council for the Family issued a docuмent called "Vademecuм for Confessors Concerning the Morality of Conjugal Life." It is addressed to confessors and seeks to offer some practical guidelines for the confession and absolution of the faithful in matters of conjugal chastity.  The Vademecuм, in its paragraph n. 13, addresses the cases of *cooperation* in the sin of a spouse who voluntarily renders the unitive act infertile. In other words, you are cooperating with your wife who is using contraception. This cooperation on your part can be morally permissible when the three following conditions are jointly met: 1) when the action of the cooperating spouse is not already illicit in itself; (your having marital relations with your wife is surely morally permissible) 2)when proportionally grave reasons exist for cooperating in the sin of the other spouse; (for example, the danger of separation or divorce) 3)when you are seeking to help the your wife to desist from such conduct (patiently, with prayer, charity and dialogue; although not necessarily in that moment, nor on every single occasion.)

  • I think they are driving at the toleration of an evil in order to preserve a greater good.  If so, this is a sound principle.

I do not possess the resources, but I imagine this is pretty consistent with the pre-V2 moral guidelines.
"Fear God, and keep His commandments: for this is all man."
