Wojtyla’s engineer friend Ciesielski comes one step closer to beatification
Jerzy Ciesielski with his wife Danuta and Karol Wojtyla

Francis has recognised the heroic virtues of Polish layman and father, Jerzy Ciesielski, who was guided by the chaplain of Krakow University who later became the first Polish Pope

A few days ago Pope Francis signed the decree recognising the heroic virtues of Jerzy Ciesielski, who is now a step closer to sainthood just as his great friend and teacher, Karol Wojtyla, whom he never lived to see as Pope. In the homily he said at Ciesielski’s funeral (he died tragically whilst on an Egyptian cruise in 1970) John Paul II confided that he felt the same sadness Jesus had felt in the Garden of Gethsemane.

Wojtyla taught and guided a group of university students in Krakow who would soon become mothers and fathers. One of them was engineering student, Jerzy Ciesielski. The time spent with these young people influenced Wojtyla in certain fundamental areas of his pontificate.

Jerzy Ciesielski was born in Krakow in 1929, 9 years after Wojtyla. This age difference meant that Ciesielski met Wojtyla when the former was studying at the Polytechnic University of Krakow and the latter was till a young chaplain. Ciesielski spent much of his university life attending meetings at the Basilica of St. Florian’s Church and in the Środowisko, the circle of students that met regularly with Fr. Karol. Ciesielski, who had been a scout as a youngster, shared two great passions with Wojtyla: the mountains and canoeing. It was in the Srodowisko group that he met his wife Danuta whom he married in 1957. Wojtyla was celebrant at their wedding.

“Fr. Karol came with us on trips, to concerts, to the theatre and the cinema - Mrs. Danuta explained a while back, recalling the atmosphere of that group -. We talked during excursions, around the fire and at organised meetings which took place in our homes. We had long one-to-one conversations with him about relationship problems and married life. Tot his day I have no idea how he found the time.”

Some of the issues they talked about were very serious. “One day, Wojtyla said after Ciesielski’s death, Jerzy said lay people were also called to become saints. We talked about marriage as the sacramental path towards the fulfilment of life as a couple; and about work as an essential part of a person’s vocation. And this was before the Second Vatican Council took place.”

In the meantime, Ciesielski had become a professor at the same Polytechnic where he had studied; his family had grown in size; first Maria and Katarzyna were born, then Piotr. By that time, Karol had been created cardinal and was now Archbishop of Krakow. But the bond between him and the Srodowisko families remained the same as ever. In 1968 Ciesieski went to talk to the cardinal about a new experience he had had: he had got to know the Chiara Lubich Focolari movement. With his friend Wojtyla’s blessing, the layman Ciesielski personally promoted the opening of the first Mariapolis centre in a Poland which was still under the firm grip of communism.

But there was another experience Ciesielski was about to begin: he was offered the opportunity to teach young African engineers for a semester at the University of Khartoum. He gladly accepted, overcome by that spirit of unity among peoples which was typical of the Focolari movement he was inspired by.But this was precisely when tragedy struck. In the autumn of 1970, Ciesieski’s family went to visit him and being a lover of rivers, he decided to take his children on a boat ride on the Nile on 7 October. The boat capsized and only his wife Danuta and their elder daughter survived. Danuta had stayed behind at the hotel and the elder daughter was on the deck managed to save herself. Jerzy, however, was in one of the cabins with his younger children who were sleeping and didn’t make it.

Ciesielski’s beatification process began in 1985 and now Francis has recognised his heroic virtues just a few months ahead of John Paul II’s canonization next 27 April.

Can we canonize that woman who gave JPII the pagan blessing too while we're at it?

Do you mean the one who stood topless in front of him 'blessing' him with her paps-without-pasties-on, or are you talking about the one in the India Hindu ritual that smeared cow manure on his forehead in plain sight of everyone?

I believe the pic I've seen would have been the Hindu.  But wait a minute, if she smeared cow manure on him, maybe canonizing her really isn't such a bad idea.

Someone asked me to go to the Focolare meetings before, and also to go to this thing called Taize prayer run by the dominicans. I never went. Reason? Call it laziness, or suspicion, or distraction with other things, but it was a blessing whatever it was. Wolves in sheep's clothing.

What is Focolare? I'm guessing its some type of NO group like the charismatics or more like the Sillon? Ive heard the name before but have never seen them around here.  I guess they are more of a continental European thing?

It's pathetic to think this is the only saint candidate that they can come up with in the conciliar church.

1) a friend of JPII
2) a father (of how many children? Likely two)
3) an engineer
4) that basically went to mass, maybe?
5)Liked Focolorie

Pathetic!

If canonized, I expect he will be the first saint to have died tragically on a cruise.

It's becoming increasingly difficult to distinguish the difference between an article in The Onion and news coming from "Rome." "O great defender of the cruise ship buffet, pray for us." The Conciliar Church is a parody of itself. "

Wojtyla’s engineer friend Ciesielski is not the only future "saint" of the "new evangelization" of apostate Rome. The Focolare has submitted the request to start the process for Chiara Lubich's "canonization". Ciesielski is only the beginning. Luther next?

Chiara Lubich: to become saints together
Saturday, December 14, 2013

Here are some excerpts of the interview given in Aleteia, on December 9, by Lucia Abignente, after the decision of the Focolare Movement to submit the request to start the process of canonization of the foundress.

Lucia Abignente is part of the Chiara Lubich Centre: A docuмentation Centre, also a study centre, a centre of scientific research and promotion of the historical figure of the foundress of the Focolare Movement.

Saints are witnesses of the faith who are recommended as examples by the Catholic Church: what is the example that Chiara Lubich gives?

Abignente: […] her life has always stood out due to the passing on to others of the purest joy of faith. In the beginning of the ‘40s, a priest told her: “God loves you immensely”. This certainty, that became the foundation of her life, was immediately shared by Chiara: not only “I” am loved by God, but he loves all of “us” immensely. Hers was never an individual journey but it has always had the character of universality. This is also what happened in her journey towards sanctity. “To become saints together” she repeated to us. Because of this she has always made us participate in whatever God made her understand, so as to walk together towards Him. “That all may be one”: this was the desire and the goal of the life of Chiara up to the end […]

The President Maria Voce explained that from all over – even from representatives of other churches and religions – the hope was expressed that this process could be initiated …

Abignente: The ecuмenical dialogue, that of interreligious dialogue and the one with persons of other convictions were born quite naturally in the Focolare Movement, determined by circuмstances rather than by a theoretical intention. The first to enter into dialogue were the German Evangelicals in 1961. They were touched by the experience of Chiara, of how she lived the Gospel, eversince 1944, during the war, in the bomb shelters, when she would read the Gospel with her companions and together they tried to put it into practice. Chiara was especially close to Athenagoras, the Patriarch of Constantinople […] The persons of other confessions or religions and also those with no religious convictions felt the humanity of Chiara which attracted them and rooted them in her life of the Word. For this reason, we too look at the starting of this journey as something that does not divide, even with its external signs, respect for brothers of other faiths or other experiences because the sanctity based on the Bible must invite others to a more profound joining in the journey towards God or towards the non-religious moral values that we share with persons of other convictions.

How will you accompany the journey that starts today?

Abignente: We have undertaken a great task beforehand, of gathering all the published writings of Chiara that will be examined in the beatification process. We are dealing with thousands of pages. We must also include the research docuмents, also docuмents that have never published before, that come from the different sources of the archives of the Movement. In these years after her passing, the memory of Chiara has always remained alive and on the anniversary of her death, March 14, there have been many Eucharistic celebrations often presided by Bishops and meetings and initiatives of all kinds. There is a “reputation of sanctity” that surrounds her person all over the world which are accompanied by signs of graces received that have been communicated to us. We don’t know how things will evolve but what seems clear to us is that this journey (…) can help each one to deepen his or her relationship with God.
