Communiqué of the Superior General of the Society of St. Pius X,

Bishop Bernard Fellay

It has come to our attention that Bishop Richard Williamson, a member of our Society, granted an interview to a Swedish network. In this interview, he also commented on historical issues, especially on the genocide of Jєωs by the National-Socialist regime. It is obvious that a bishop speaks with religious authority solely on matters of faith and morals. Our Society claims no authority over historical or other secular matters.

The mission of the Society is the offering and restoration of authentic Catholic teaching, as reflected in the traditional dogmas. We are known, accepted and appreciated worldwide for this.

We view this matter with great concern, as this exorbitance has caused severe damage to our religious mission. We apologize to the Holy Father and to all people of good will for the trouble it has caused.

It must remain clear that those comments do not reflect in any way the attitude of our community. That is why I have forbidden Bishop Williamson to issue any public opinion on any political or historical matter until further notice.

The constant accusations against the Society have also apparently served the purpose of discrediting our mission. We will not allow this, but will continue to preach Catholic doctrine and to offer the Sacraments in the ancient rite.

  • I must say, this makes me VERY, VERY uneasy -- and angry.

Why must I choose between the full truth and the SSPX?

I know a lot of people are distracted by this, but isn't there a point at which the SSPX can do no further good unless the WHOLE truth is pursued? How much good can be done if part of the truth is censored, however unpopular it may be?

At least I can continue to talk about the h0Ɩ0cαųst all I want. And I'll do so anywhere I please. Good is never served by hiding the truth.

I fully support Bishop Williamson in this matter. He did nothing imprudent or wrong. He is a courageous, true Apostle who seeks only the good of souls and for truth to prevail.

How can souls be saved without the truth?

  • I am starting to wonder if the stuff posted on traditio about Fellay may be correct after this blatant show of pandering and cowardice.

  • Why was it necessary to let the world know he has been silenced?  Why not just say that his views are not our views, and leave it at that?  You could silence him, leaving it all completely private.  This is mind-game bullsh*t, and Williamson should just leave them now.

Good point. I'm sure some would catch on eventually, but it would be much less of a big deal. This very public act of authority is certainly going to cause much division within the supporters of the SSPX.

  • Considering Matthew's regular contact with, and high regard for, Bp. W., it is likely he has not seen/interacted with the others as much as one might naturaly surmise.  The 'great shakeout' has begun.  Trust me, I am involved in a whale of a situation right now, wherein a well-known cleric has manifested clear indications of being a viper.  Wha-cho-seff, my chillins.

Seems like the same sort of thing is happneing with the SSPX

Imo, it is a given that the enemies attempted to ifiltrate the SSPX from the beginning.  This is not to cast stones, but to point out the obvious: It worked like a charm up to that stage; why stop?  To infiltrate and cause divisions, and then do the same within the resistance to the problems, is their chosen method.  It is the Hegelian dialectic in action.  I am sure they have done it to others besides the SSPX, but, as they are the largest and most visible, it is a 'no brainer' that they would be a target from inception.

Sure, I understand. But why get mad about it? The Superior General only did what he thinks best for the Society. The word "forbidden" may be indeed rude for a co-bishop, nonetheless, admonitions are always essential.

As Bp. Williamson already apologized, I've faith that the SSPX in whole still respect and trust whatever the Superior General's decision - of whom they voted last 2006.

  • I am also very disturbed by this chain of events.

Why is no religious issuing a correction to the creature who interviewed Bp. Williamson?

The man was completely out of line in his accusations of Bp. Williamson, calling him a denier, etc.  It was a complete set-up.

I am appalled by this media hack.  He deserved a vigorous ear-boxing.

Silencing Bp. Williamson gives the appearence of condoning the backlash against him, at least to me.  I am very sorry to see the lack of robust loyalty +Williamson deserves.  It is very, very troubling.

  • Fr. Commentator at Traditio is usually dead on. What is going on with the SSPX? God is sifting, this is showing those who refused to see the truth exactly what dealing with NewRome amounts to. Bishop Williamson is probably not surprised at all in this, he is willing to be martyred for standing up for the Church and against Christ's constant enemies. Fellay is going after +Williamson because he thinks him to be an albatross that will prevent Fellay's dragging the SSPX down. Fellay is an infiltrator, like Judas. And that is where I will stand until I see Fellay prove otherwise. And, no, one of those flowery speaches he sends out that have no real substance, but are infact smoke and mirrors will not get it done.
