  • (By the way, I censor out that term on CathInfo because it's so inaccurate and stupid)

SSPX-supporting Catholics -- traditional Catholics -- should not be called Lefebvr-ist or Lefebvr-ite because we never went after some man with new doctrine.

Archbishop Marcel Lefebvre was a faithful prelate of the Catholic Church -- nothing more, nothing less. He is only remarkable because he remained faithful during a mass apostasy.

Rome (as a whole) lost the Faith. +Lefebvre and a small remnant kept it.

Moreover, we don't follow him in some kind of cult of personality. He went on to his reward in 1991. This is 2012. If it was just some charismatic cult leader, the SSPX would be long gone. Instead, it has experienced massive growth during the 90's and 00's, as more and more Catholics are striving for true Catholic doctrine, sacraments, and Catholic culture.

I'll tell you what -- the SSPX can't be a cult; I'm only supporting the group because I agree with their position and mission. I certainly wouldn't follow +Fellay to hell and back!

  • I always thought that term was ridiculous. As you said, it makes it sound like a cult, much like the 'Palmarian Church' or something.

  • I get so irritated when I read or hear it - I have always regarded it as a slam in a direct attempt to intimidate and insult not only the Bishops and priests of The SSPX, but the laity as well.

A certain reporter uses it constantly. The problem with it really is not that it gets to us or not; but that it shapes the minds and hearts of readers who do not understand what the Archbishop did and why back in 1988.

Negativity 'sells papers'and infects small minds. That's what irritates me the most!   :smash-pc:

  • I was (sort of kindly) called a "Lefebricano" by a nun in Assisi. I kinda liked the Italianized version.

  • I agree that the term is ridiculous.
Please ignore ALL of my posts. I was naive during my time posting on this forum and didn’t know any better. I retract and deeply regret any and all uncharitable or erroneous statements I ever made here.

  • Cupertino --

How about what the common man thinks when he hears it?  That seems the most accurate to me. Communication is all about conveying ideas -- not the contents of Webster's Dictionary.

How about you tell a bunch of people on the street that you had intercourse with me this morning?

    It's true, after all!

Between your post and this one, we had electronic verbal intercourse.

Now the word "intercourse" has a certain connotation in the minds of 99.999% of the population, so the various technical definitions of the word are more or less irrelevant.

  • That's funny- not too long ago Cupertino was up in a rut about the use of a term which actually accurately described 'certain' sedevecantists, and said the word shouldn't be used at all. I tried to make the very same point to him that he's making here. The irony....

     :roll-laugh2:

This one of the most humorous posts I have ever read at CathInfo!

Oh man, and it is funnier because I made this mistake once actually.

    Quote
Friend: "So why are you so stressed out these days?"

Me: "I'm just exhausted from so much intercourse I have had with certain people in my address book."

    Friend: "[Expletive] dude!"

Me: "Oh, uh, no! No! That's not what I meant! Gosh..." [I went on to explain the meaning of the noun "intercourse"]

Friend: [Boisterous laughter] "Yeah you need to word things carefully. We're not all book worms like you."

Me: "That's why I tell the young people not to contemplate or engage in illicit carnal commerce before entering into Sacred Matrimony. I do not want to give the impression that I am discouraging communication, especially written correspondence, if I merely say 'No intercourse before marriage.'"

Friend: "[Expletive], dude! You never learn. You may be telling them not to steal meat."

    Me: "What!?"

[The debate went on and on about that until something happened that distracted us]

    True story.
Please ignore all that I have written regarding sedevacantism.
