  • I often speak of papal infallibility with trads, especially faithfuls of SSPX, which often (and in good faith too) restrict papal infallibility at not many pronouncements. I recommend them, absolutely without any polemical spirit and very cordially, to think about these beautiful words of Cardinal Sarto. I found this sentence in an old biography of St. Pius X. The translation from italian is mine, so it is not very good. For this I apologize.
    Greetings.

“When we speak of the Vicar of Christ, we must not examine, but to obey; we must not measure the extent of the command to restrict the performance of obedience; we must not quibble on the clearest word of the Pope to overwhelm its sense; we must not interpret his will on the basis of preconceptions, which destroy its explicit value; we must not oppose rights to the Pope's right to teach and command; we must not weigh his judgments, we must not discuss his orders in order not to do direct affront to Jesus Christ Himself... The society is sick; all the noble parts of this body are affected and the principles of vitality are compromised. The only refuge, the only remedy, is the Pope” (cardinal Giuseppe Sarto, future Pope St. Pius X, 1894).

  • Popes that break with the Catholic Faith (a.k.a. "Tradition") are a different matter altogether.

I (and any other educated Catholic) know the Catholic Faith when it's uttered -- or something contrary to it is uttered.

In rejecting that which is against the Faith, I'm not being picky or looking for a flaw or excuse to disobey the Pope.

Why don't you post something about the Papacy, how we must follow the Pope to be different from the Protestants? The Papacy is the principle of unity for Catholics.

What you posted does not compel one to become a sedevacantist.

I'm a Catholic. To avoid confusion these days, I would add "traditional" to that. But there's nothing missing from me as long as I'm a traditional Catholic. Formally rejecting the pope is not necessary for salvation.

In the timeless words of Luke Skywalker...
"You failed, your highness. I'm a Jedi, like my father before me."

  • Totally 100% Correct and spot on...

When there is a valid Pope. Otherwise, we denounce and decry the Heretic, just as Hypothius and Eulalius did, each in different ways with Nestorius.
'Take care not to resemble the multitude whose knowledge of God's will only condemns them to more severe punishment.'

    -St. John of Avila
