Vatican I Vote on Papal Infallibility

Yesterday, for the first time in our life, we witnessed the clapping of hands and waving of handkerchiefs in a sacred Basilica--yesterday was repeated in St. Peter's what over fourteen hundred years since took place in the Third General Council at Ephesus, where as soon as the Fathers announced the decree proclaiming the Blessed Virgin to be the Mother of God, and to be entitled to be honored as such, the faithful multitudes became seized with holy enthusiasm, and, unable to restrain their joy, rent the air with loud applause.
At the appointed hour commenced the holy sacrifice of the Mass, followed by the Litanies of the Saints and the solemn invocation of the Holy Ghost by the Sovereign Pontiff, echoed by the assembled Bishops, all on their knees; and, after many prayers offered to the Almighty for His divine light and heavenly assistance, one of the Fathers read aloud the Constitution on which the votes were about to be taken, and which had been the subject of discussion for a few months; after which the vote of each was distinctly asked and registered. This being ended, the Holy Father was formally informed, that, out of 555 prelates, 553 voted in favor of its decrees, and just 2 against them; and then the Sovereign Pontiff, with a clear and majestic voice, approved and confirmed the Constitution.
No sooner was the word Confirmandum uttered, than the assembled multitude and Fathers, as if moved by one electric sentiment, gave vent to feelings of joy which filled their hearts in repeated rounds of applause, filling the immense Basilica with their evivas and clapping of hands, which the Masters of Ceremonies had no small difficulty to subdue.
Absent, therefore, from you in the body, but present in spirit, we beg of you to render thanks to God for having made us children of the Catholic Church and to pray sincerely that, in His infinite mercy, He may vouchsafe to bring the erring into the one fold. Let us also continue to implore your supplications to God, not only for the General Council, but also for the peace of the world.

Forgot to mention the dramatic scene during the vote for Papal Infallibility.
As the 553 Bishops balloted, they all shouted their confirming "placets"
