  • It has been taught that there are four truths that one must explicitly assent to prior to death:

    1) That God exists.
    2) That God rewards the good and punishes the wicked.
    3) That God is Three Persons in One - Father, Son, Holy Ghost
    4) That the Second Person of Blessed Trinity became Man (Incarnation) and died for our sins (Redemption)

What is the theological note of this proposition (i.e., these four truths must be explicitly assented to prior to death)?

  • I thought that this was the minimum in order to be baptized.

  • You mean what is the theological note for believing that all four must be believed?

I haven't seen the issue treated where all four are given a note as a grouped proposition.  But I would imagine that if we went back in a time machine that most theologians would classify these as at least common, some may go as far as certain but I think definitely common.

Though I'm not sure they would say that about the redemption.
"Be kind; do not seek the malicious satisfaction of having discovered an additional enemy to the Church... And, above all, be scrupulously truthful. To all, friends and foes alike, give that serious attention which does not misrepresent any opinion, does not distort any statement, does not mutilate any quotation. We need not fear to serve the cause of Christ less efficiently by putting on His spirit". (Vermeersch, 1913).

  • Having recieved death threats before from the British state, (which I will not elaborate on), I am glad to say that I hold to no heresy and also do hold to all these truths.

Yes.  I know that the word "should" was used in the 1949 Revised Baltimore Catechism of Fr. Connelly.
