According to vatican 2 the orthodox are part of the church. The church merely "subsists" in the Catholic church, that is to say, the greater part of it is run by the vatican.
Considering how the vatican is these days, maybe "schism" is not such a bad thing after all.
We can only hold it against the orthodox if the vatican which we want them to be in communion with - holds to the true Catholic apostolic faith, which it does not.
What would you have them do? They are more in union with Catholicism than the vatican is.
Besides, even Catholics cannot place themselves under the vatican for fear of destruction.
There is no alternative to their schism at present.
