  • Christ's words in John 3:5 are often used to argue for the necessity of Baptism: Do Christ's words in John 6:53 - "Then Jesus said to them: Amen, amen I say unto you: Except you eat the flesh of the Son of man, and drink his blood, you shall not have life in you." - likewise indicate the necessity of Holy Communion? Why or why not?

  • Catholic theologians hold that Holy Communion is necessary by necessity of precept and by moral necessity, whereas Baptism is necessary by an absolute necessity of means.  This is based on the Tradition of the Church, the Church Fathers, and various theological considerations.

  • It would seem not, because baptized infants haven't yet received the Eucharist (at least in the Roman Rite), yet nobody suggests they are not saved.  The same would apply to a catechumen who were baptized and dropped dead immediately, such that there was no time or opportunity to give him Viaticuм.

This is not to suggest that someone beyond the age of reason, who has the opportunity, and who has been taught what the Eucharist is, should forego receiving communion indefinitely.

Right, the perennial practice of the Church alone would render it an infallible teaching of the Ordinary Universal Magisterium.
