    The Popes Against Modern Errors:

    The Encyclical Mirari Vos
    of Pope Gregory XVI (1832)

Last year, our friends over at Restoration Radio launched an exciting new series on the errors of modernity: In The Popes Against Modern Errors, sedevacantist Bishop Donald Sanborn analyzes and comments on the great anti-modern encyclical letters of the Popes from Gregory XVI through Pius XII (1831-1958).

The first episode is dedicated to Pope Gregory XVI’s 1832 landmark encyclical against liberalism, Mirari Vos. This magisterial docuмent condemns and refutes errors such as indifferentism, freedom of speech, religious liberty, and separation of church and state. Calls for an end to mandatory clerical celibacy are also proscribed.

Although this radio show is generally accessible only to members who have a subscription to True Restoration, nevertheless we have decided to sponsor this first episode on Mirari Vos, making it free to the general public. We trust you will find this program most informative and educational. Click below to listen:

A number of years ago, TAN Books published a collection of the 16 most important papal encyclicals against the errors of modernity from Gregory XVI through Pius XII, entitled The Popes Against Modern Errors. It makes a great companion piece to the radio program and is essential reading for all who want to see how different the Catholic Church of the ages is, compared to the modern-day Vatican II Sect, which has swallowed most modern errors hook, like, and sinker. The book is still in print and can be obtained as a paperback on in electronic format here.

Interesting tidbit: When Cardinal Bartolomeo Cappellari was elected Pope and took the name of Gregory XVI on February 2, 1831, he was not yet a bishop but only a priest. His episcopal consecration took place four days later and was conferred by Cardinal Bartolomeo Pacca (source).
"I receive Thee, redeeming Prince of my soul. Out of love for Thee have I studied, watched through many nights, and exerted myself: Thee did I preach and teach. I have never said aught against Thee. Nor do I persist stubbornly in my views. If I have ever expressed myself erroneously on this Sacrament, I submit to the judgement of the Holy Roman Church, in obedience of which I now part from this world." • More NovusOrdoWatch spam, eh?  You're incorrigible and persist despite the public warning from Matthew.

  • i saw that on Novus ordo watch. I don't read as much now on the errors of the NO because there's no point to it, unless you get off on its abuses. The focus should be on living as a catholic, and to that end that website has some useful parts, as does this very website. I mean we're not here to bash the NO but to bash other traditional catholics.
ok this month is the month of the sacred heart of Jesus. I hope you can all devote yourselves to that in public worship if you have a church.

  • This is especially of interest to those who can not get to Mass as often or hear a good sermon.  I especially like to know what the True Popes actually taught about what "they" are or are not teaching the youth of today.  One of my grandchildren unfortunately attends a NO "Catholic school"  she is 15 and never heard of Sanctifying grace.  She complains to me, that they seldom ever teach anything about God, and her parents just say, "thats because most of the students that attend there are not religious nor even Catholic in name only".

Some of the nuns from Mount St. Michael, about 10 years ago, left Tradition and went to that NO convent, but my granddaughter tells me they are not allowed to teach religion.  Go figure!

We need to know our enemy in order to defeat him, with God's good grace we will in time defeat the enemy.

Yes, I do agree we must spend as much time as we can on keeping the faith, since that is the question God will ask us when we stand before Him.  "How did you keep the faith?"
    Please pray for my soul.

  • yes, the folks using the internet like Traditio and Novus ordo watch are responding effectively in some cases, to a crisis in the church. I agree that they have done great work in outreach to those looking for roman catholicism and have provided some excellent catechesis, for free.
you said that many don't care. I think that must be because of the lack of leadership, for millennia the church led people to salvation, now do you really think the people have changed? No, they need to be fed, like Jesus told Peter in John. Some traditional priests can be snooty about it all, writing people off as no good, incorrigible damned souls. That can hardly be true, since the change is not in the people. The laity did not change after vatican II.

  • The topic is somewhat complex.  The people in the 50's were lackadaisical going through the motions, Mass once a week, if that, Confession once a year.  No study, the Priest takes care of that.  Some clergy were lackadaisical as well.  Many religious left because it was obvious that the structures of the Catholic Church were being used for a new religion.  Others simply realized this truth but stayed for reasons of convenience ranging from pensions to human respect.  This is the sad truth with novus ordo clergy even today.  Many start out sincere and ultimately realized something is really wrong but then stay any way for convenience avoiding looking for root causes and staying "within" to "fight".  Some even get themselves secretly ordained validly.  But stay in the NO.

The laity, some of them, do the same thing, the find out there is a problem but avoid doing anything about for reasons of convenience and human respect.
