Of shows and performances.

Look at Catholic schools.  Are they doing plays about the Bible. Maybe at Christmas time but most shows are worldly and inappropriate for Catholic schools.  Then there are plays called classic but written by liberals of their time.  They have plenty of holy scripture  to put on plays.

The arts were created to remove man from God.

And as far as colleges, they were bad back in the days of St Augustine.

We have sodomites like the days of Sodom and Gomorrah

Did you know that priests would not give absolution to actors?  ::)
This as recent as St Jean Vianney in the 1800's.
What did they know/believe that we don't?

Ave María:

Do you have more info on this? Was it some kind of pastoral regulation or just one of those generally accepted rules without a decree from their superiors?

This topic interests me because I've always suspected that there is something inherently wrong with the acting profession. An actor is pretending to be something that he is not (which is at least proximate to lying), even if the role they are playing is virtuous.

I've read somewhere that in ancient (non-Christianized) Rome, acting and prostitution had basically the same reputation. I also remember reading that theater plays (not only the lurid ones) were forbidden in the Papal States under Pope St. Pius V or Pope Paul IV (can't remember which one, one of those 'heavy-handed' popes from the Counter Reformation).

This is from St. Alphonsus' sermon for the 7th Sunday after Pentecost "On the education of children":
Quote
Parents should prohibit to their children all games which bring destruction on their families and on their own souls, and also masks, scandalous comedies, and certain, dangerous conversations and parties of pleasure.
It's interesting that something seemingly innocuous as a mask must be banished from a home where children are growing up. The saint and doctor of the Church knows better.

I have noticed that many young children are naturally afraid of any kind of facial covering.  Saint Alphonsus was very wise.

Sorry I posted from memory (which is the pits these days)
I believe I read it in Trochu's biography on St Jean Vianney, France C 1810-1859 and the autobiography titled "Hunted Priest" of Fr. John Gerard SJ, England C 1580.
Info came from two countries centuries apart.

Me too.

I was recently listening to a podcast and the hosts were reading/answering submitted questions. The subject was from a man whose mother was ordering various television subscriptions including porn. You would think anyone with sense would pick up on this being a sign of both depression and evilness. Nope. The topic was the cost and how to get mom to subscribe to less television subscriptions or bundle. There was no concern about the amount of time she spent watching these mindless shows or the evil subject content in itself.

St Alphonsus would be called a puritan by Catholics of today.

That’s really bad when any one’s mom is watching porn.

I wonder if 'masks' include makeup as well. Some women are if they are wearing ton of clay on their face.

Theatrical moments from Vatican II parishes.

To be fair there are some novus Ordo parishes which try to be holy but the above aren’t.
