St. Bonaventure commenting on this quote:

"For many, both evil and good, hold high office in the church; and would that there may not be more of them who are evil than are good."

Says,

Conclusion 1. "And this election is different from vocation, because grace is given to many who do not persevere; that is why they are said to be called but not chosen."


In a separate work he says,

"When God damns and reproves, He acts according to justice; but when He predestines, He acts according to grace and mercy, which do not exclude justice. ---Since , then, all men, in so far as they were but a mass of perdition, ought to be damned, it follows that more are reproved than are chosen, in order to show that salvation is due to a special grace, whereas damnation is due to common justice. No man may therefore complain of the Divine Will, for It accomplishes all most rightly, rather ought we in all things to give thanks and honor the government of Divine Providence."
