Saint Matthew Chapter24:22. And unless those days had been shortened, no flesh should be saved: but for the sake of the elect those days shall be shortened.

Matthew 24:29 "And immediately after the tribulation of those days, the sun shall be darkened and the moon shall not give her light, and the stars shall fall from heaven, and the powers of heaven shall be moved"

Catholic Bible Douay-Rheims Commentary: "Or flaming meteors[from the tail of a comet] resembling [shooting] stars."

.

You are absolutely correct that it doesn't. And the passage refers to the end of the world, not the three days of darkness.

The three days of darkness is not in Scripture.

The three days of darkness makes sense when we understand the Church, the bride of Christ, follows Her Lord in His life, death, and resurrection.  The Church goes through Her passion and death (seemingly),  three days of darkness as in a tomb,  and Her resurrection being the triumph of the Sacred Heart of Jesus and Immaculate Heart of Mary.  The Ascension on the Day of Judgement.

Apocalypse 11:

7 And when they shall have finished their testimony, the beast, that ascendeth out of the abyss, shall make war against them, and shall overcome them, and kill them.  8 And their bodies shall lie in the streets of the great city, which is called spiritually, Sodom and Egypt, where their Lord also was crucified.  9 And they of the tribes, and peoples, and tongues, and nations, shall see their bodies for three days and a half: and they shall not suffer their bodies to be laid in sepulchres.  10 And they that dwell upon the earth shall rejoice over them, and make merry: and shall send gifts one to another, because these two prophets tormented them that dwelt upon the earth.

11 And after three days and a half, the spirit of life from God entered into them. And they stood upon their feet, and great fear fell upon them that saw them.  12 And they heard a great voice from heaven, saying to them: Come up hither. And they went up to heaven in a cloud: and their enemies saw them.
