Church attendance soars with the 15 minute Mass

    Thursday, 25 February 2010

An Irish cleric's congregation has increased tenfold in a week -- thanks to a quickie Mass.

Despite the controversies which have rocked the church in recent years and the resulting fall-off in attendances at church services, Fr Michael Kenny has been packing them in at his Kilconly parish in Co Galway.

The popular priest started his 15-minute Mass as nothing more than an experiment at the start of Lent, just over a week ago. And he attributes the speed of the service to foregoing a sermon -- and having the help of a Eucharistic minister for communion.

The regular morning Mass at 9am had been drawing an attendance of just three or four up to the start of his no-frills experiment.

Fr Kenny decided to bring the time back to 7.30am and guarantee he would keep parishioners no longer than a quarter of a hour.

Attendances at the small north Galway parish church have now soared to between 30 and 40, with Mass-goers walking out the door by 7.45am.

"The general view among parishioners is that the 9am Mass was totally unsuitable for people going to work.

"Now, more and more people are coming along to the Mass at 7.30am as they know they can be on their way to work or school 15 or 20 minutes later and it is far more suitable," said Fr Kenny.

Fr Kenny explained that he was very conscious of the work commitments of his parishioners when he opted to try out the quickie Mass at 7.30am.

He decided to abandon the usual sermon and enlisted the help of a minister of the Eucharist to ensure that the congregation would be on its way by 7.45am.

"We have to think of the needs of people who have to travel long distances to work, some to Galway city 40km away.

"The only way they could be in time for work while also attending morning Mass during Lent is by being out of the church by 7.45am.

"We are not leaving anything out of the Mass. Everything is there, but of course I do not make any sermon. People seem to like the idea as I have the help of a Eucharistic minister each day and that speeds up the service," Fr Kenny said.

He added: "We are here to facilitate the congregation and if there are any further increases in numbers attending, then the more the merrier."

Local parishioner, Marie Woolley, from Castlegrove, said the quick Mass had worked out so well in Kilconly that she hoped the practice would be repeated in other parishes.

"It is very refreshing to go to Mass so early every morning and you feel spiritually uplifted for the rest of the day. Fr Kenny has come up with a great idea and I hope other churches copy what he is doing," she said.

Frank and Noreen Curley, from Ballyroe, said the early Mass lasting 15 minutes suited everybody -- especially Frank, who travels to work in Tuam.

"Fair play to Fr Michael for factoring in the work needs of his parishioners when planning the morning Mass during Lent," said Frank.

  • Many prophets have said that Ireland will be drowned with water to spare them going down with the Antichrist.  I think they are getting some major rains right now.  The Prots have St. Patrick's already.

  • The Novus Ordo "church" here would be funny if it wasnt so blasemphous.

It reminds me a lot of anti-popes Augustine I and II.

  • Fr. Kenny might not realize it, but he's keeping up an old tradition.

Irish priests used to be known for their "no-frills" approach to the Liturgy, which dates back to the English persecutions.

My Liturgy professor taught us about the phenomenon: Mrs. X comes up to Father Y after High Mass and complains that he has gone Novus Ordo, because he was [insert part of High Mass Liturgy here]. Father states that it's merely part of the Liturgy for a High Mass, and she responds, "But in the 1950's, Fr. Murphy (or Fr. McMahon, or Fr. McDonald, etc.) never did that!"

Apparently, in the 1950's many Masses -- all of which were Tridentine, of course -- lasted only 15 minutes. This is part of the reason why the Novus Ordo happened in the first place, and why we can't just return to the 50's! But I digress.

The Irish, perhaps because they are full of energy, are high-strung, etc. are impatient for a long, beautiful Mass. They tend to like things short and sweet. My dad [R.I.P.], for example, was often criticized for being a "human doing" rather than a "human being". I'm about as active and energetic as he was. I can see it being an Irish thing.

The Church for at least fifty years before Vatican II was like a man with an invisible cancer.  Vatican II is like the same man, after the cancer rises to the surface and blooms in all kinds of rainbow-like colors on his skin.  The traditionalists have the cancer in remission but it's still there.

It is imperative to learn to slow down the pace and to be reverent and to appreciate being in the presence of the Holy Eucharist.  The Mass should be an event, with organ music, polyphony and/or chant, although I know that can't be true for all times and all places.  But the faith will crumble if the liturgy is defective, as it is with these 15-minute Masses.  Yeah, I read about the 1950's, where Masses were served on an assembly line.  They'd shuffle in one group, do a quick Mass, then another group, then a quick Mass, ad infinitum.

Classic American attitude -- get it over with and then go back to work.  Since American Catholics have always been borderline Protestants, making up their own rules, for them, essentially, as with Protestants, life is about work.  How many Catholics do you think worked on Sunday?  I am trying to find a job ( sort of ) now and doubt if it will be possible to even find an employer who doesn't make me work on Sunday.  What used to be taboo is not only normal and acceptable now, but practically mandatory.

I don't even hear trad Catholics complaining much about this, about working on Sunday, and I'll bet you anything God is ENRAGED about it.  The Sabbath has been totally violated and cast down.

If you are one of these American-style drones who can't live with themselves if they're not working, who have no identity outside of work, heaven help you.  You have a house built on sand.  It's all going away.  God is sending these people a warning now, showing them how fragile the world as they know it is, the modern world, and they still don't get it.
