  • Does anyone understand the symbolism on the coffin of Pope John Paul
    II coffin?    The photo was taken during his funeral services in
    2005.

    If you mean the cross surmounting the letter M, it's from his "papal" arms:

  • Given the obvious symbolism of the letter "M", consider John 19:25:

    Now there stood by the cross of Jesus, his mother... (Douay-Rheims)

    (As an aside: It is noteworthy that, such was the reverence of Saint John for the Blessed Virgin, that he forbore in his Gospel to refer to her by her personal name.)
