  • So I went to my first SV chapel about a month ago and I have to admit that it was shocking to see Pope Pius XII's picture hanging up (rather than any VII popes or just none at all).  It bothered me, but I don't know what to make of those feelings.

For those of you who are SV, did you have a similar first experience?  Was it as jarring for you?

  • I went to a chapel at the time where the priest became SV after I did.

Later, I went to a chapel where the priest was sede but the owners of the building were not and there was a ton of fighting.

At larger sede chapels, you might find a lot of papal portraits if they have been fortunate to obtain them.

To me a picture of Pius XII says "We're taking refuge in the last certain pope." Like an army obeying the last standing orders of the general until the end, I find that comforting.

I'd run 100mph the other direction if stumbled upon an SV chapel that had a picture of him as the last pope.

  • When I assist at a SV chapel, there is a feeling of peacefulness and even purity, an overall ambience of Catholicism.

In the SSPX chapel, when I see a pic of Pope Francis, I merely mention to myself that the SSPX does not think it has the authority to officially declare the lack of status to the guy who goes around making a mockery of Catholicism with his " witticisms" every few days.

The SSPX stance bothers me and I think they should just not have a photo of a post-Vatican II Pope at all.  They can refrain from embracing SVism but they should really downplay the allegiance to Concilliarism.

When we attended the SSPX chapel, they had the rosary and some other prayers before mass. The leader would always loudly pray and mention Benedict in a loud, obnoxious tone, sorta warning the sede vacantists off. We never revealed our position, but it was definitely a hostile environment.

One of the worst things ever was a sermon that totally confused my child regarding the papacy, in which the priest said that we need to ignore the pope, our local bishop, and have nothing to do with anything from Rome. I know that might sound funny coming from a sede vacantist, but since we do not call these men by names denoting authority or office, it was scandalous and one of the reasons we stopped going there.

I didn't see anyone impugn the legitimacy of Pope Pius XII.  What are you referring to?

  • You mean by skipping the Popes after St. Pope Pius X, it doesn't show due respect to PPXII?

I'll be real: I saw old Pope pictures and knew they weren't Wojtyla (and smiled widely because someone would usually make a wisecrack I didn't understand, but knew my parents were mad that we kids heard the wisecrack), but at the time, I didn't know you HAD to hang up anything, so no, it didn't freak me out. I think the first one I saw (and I barely remember it) was during Wojtyla's thing, and it was of PPXII. I just figured "decor".

Later, at some SSPXes, we saw BXVI, but then I visited our local NO and the 'priest' there had an upside-down BXVI, and [ditzy blonde moment] I wondered why they didn't just remove the picture instead of going full-666 with it. My husband explained then that is why we're not no catholics anymore.

I don't think it's offensive to see a St. Pope Pius X pic; I've seen the Leo III and thought he was Charlemange   but I didn't really feel it was a offensive to Pius X. And (worse yet), as a child, I'd thought a Pope Pius V was Santa Claus! (St. Nicholas.) My Mom walloped me on the back of the head when I said it aloud.

Nope: I'm good as long as it's not:

and then I would run for the hills.

Anyone who would "run 100mph the other direction if stumbled upon an SV chapel that had a picture of [Pope Pius XII] as the last pope" certainly sounds as if she's impugning the legitimacy of his papacy.

I attend a sedevacantist chapel.  When I travel, I give preference to CMRI chapels, then to non-CMRI sedevacantist chapels, then to SSPX chapels, then to other traditional non-sedevacantist independent chapels.  I do not attend indult chapels/parishes.

While I haven't been to a lot of different chapels, the only ones in which I specifically recall seeing a picture of any pope (who was not canonized a saint prior to Vatican II) are the SSPX chapels and one independent chapel.  While I think it would be just plain silly to hang a picture of Pope Pius XII in the chapel, it wouldn't cause me to run in the opposite direction.

I'm going to guess that he was the one who down thumbed my post.  After re-reading my OP, I can see how it might have come across as if I didn't like to see his picture hanging there.  It wasn't that I had a problem with seeing Pius XII, it was jarring for me having come from the NO churches (where you would see the post VII popes).  This was my first experience going to a SV chapel and it was upsetting to me.  Like I said in the OP I'm not sure why I felt that way and I was looking to see if anyone had a similar experience.  I'm guessing it was just an in-your-face realization of the SV position.

No! There's been a misunderstanding! Haha.

TKGS, just to clarify, when I said I'd run the opposite direction, I was referring to stumbling upon a picture of cardinal Siri as pope, not Pius XII. I even quoted quoted Matto's question about Siri in my reply, if you go back and take a look at it. And just to further clarify, I, in no way, question the legitimacy of Pius the XII. :)
