Where I am from (uk) it is the poor and feckless who waste the most food. They are disorganised, don't plan what to buy and let stuff go past its sellby date and then throw it away not realising that it is good for days or weeks beyond those manufacturers' worst-case dates.
I was brought up to eat everything on my plate, so, in our house, nothing goes to waste.
When bread goes stale we dry it above the oven and make breadcrumbs by grating the dried out bread.
Women also tend to waste food. If you observe half eaten meals in restaurants they are invariably left by women. I guess they don't want to get fat, bu why not simply order a started an not a main course?
Anyway, why is Pope Francis worrying about this tosh? We have the technology to produce a surplus of food if we simply encourage it by fair and stable prices.
