I would have to see the image to which you are alluding, but normally there would be a star in a great number of images depicting the Blessed Virgin Mary. The number of rays may vary.
The star reminds us that Our Lady is truly "Stella maris," the Star of the Sea who guides us amidst the turbulent and menacing waves of this world unto the port of eternal salvation. In the Litanies of Loretto, Holy Mother Church hails Our Lady as "Stella matutina," or "Morning-star" - as the morning star heralds the sun, so Our Lady heralded the advent of the Divine Sun, Christ Our Lord.
I have seen a sixfold pointed star in sacred art before, but never, never, like the one we now see in the flag of the so-called "State of Israel."
