  • What would be wrong with the SSPX just becoming a Personal Prelature and just keep doing what they are doing?

In my personal opinion I think this would be the best way to go.
Basically that is like a Diocese without boundaries so the local bishops have no control.

  • Opus Dei is a personal prelature and they are still at the mercy of the local Bishops to let them in to begin with. Plus their members do not belong to an "Opus Dei" parish. They go to their local parishes and only see OD priests for confessions, conferences, spiritual direction, etc.

It would be a bad fit for the Society. They need to be able to run Trad Chapels like their own parishes completely autonomous from the local Bishops.

  • What would happen if Barack Obama allowed the state of Alaska to be his "Personal Administrative Territory", answerable only to him? Would that give Alaskans more freedom or less to pass and enforce their own laws? Would it be a good idea for an independent-minded state like Alaska to be even closer to a big government, tax-and-spend Democrat like Obama? Or would it be better for them to put as much distance as possible between themselves and their ideological foe?

St. Jude, who, disregarding the threats of the impious, courageously preached the doctrine of Christ,
    pray for us.

  • If I understand it correctly, isn't a Personal Prelature subject at least to the Prefect for the Congregation of Bishops?  If so, there is at least that one string attached, which, of course, attaches to a number of other strings right up to the pope.

A personal prelature means captivity.  Even the lifting of the "excommunications" causes a kind of captivity, in that the bishops are no longer free to consecrate new ones without the risk of being "re-excommunicated."
