Title: SSPX Carmelites in Spokane WA
Post by: Christo Rege on January 16, 2022, 06:07:21 PM
Would love to hear the opinions of the members on this forum regarding this Carmel convent. Feel free to let me know what you think and definitely mention other traditional Carmels- that would be most fruitful. Which traditional convent that sticks to the Rule would be the best choice? (asking for someone I know).

What do you think makes a good candidate to the Carmelite Order? From good families (both parents), and what of candidates from broken families (lack of paternal role)? Vocations have decreased big time since Vatican II, as we all know. Since the day and age we live in is dangerous for the youth, vocations will be lost (as Our Lady of Buen Suceso prophesied). Thanks

Well, there's some differences in the Carmels:

The Carmelites in Spokane are attached pretty tightly to the SSPX, whereas the Carmelites of the Holy Face in Ireland are independent (but closer to the Resistance than SSPX, and were recently endorsed by Archbishop Vigano).

On the other hand, not sure an American postulant could travel to Ireland without first getting the abortion clot shot, so might not be an option.

The Horarium for the Carmelites in Spokane is posted here: https://sspx.org/en/carmelites-spokane

The Irish Carmelites appear to havee the more rigorous schedule of the two, and are more hermitic by design.  Some might not be able to handle that (or not desire it).

Generally speaking, there aren't too many considerations for admission: Healthy and no canonical impediments (e.g., debt, marriage, etc.) being the biggest considerations.

There are also traditional Carmels in Fairfield, Colorado Springs, and Post Falls.

Opinions?

I believe the Post Falls group is attached to the FSSP.

The Carmelite Nuns in Fairfield are solid and austere, they also celebrate the Carmelite Rite and pray the Carmelite Rite office of 1938. They are ministered to by the Carmelite Hermit monks who also do the same liturgy: edcarm.org (https://edcarm.org)

A friend of mine just entered there yesterday as a postulant, keep him in your prayers. Even though they're technically diocesan, they are *VERY* traditional in their outlook, if you catch my drift.

The Carmelites in Spokane were founded originally by Archbishop Lefebvre's blood sister, Mother Marie Christiane (she died in 1997). It was originally located in Pennsylvania, but later moved to Spokane. I hope to attend Mass there in there in the future, though it is several hours' drive away. You may have already seen this information on the convent:

It seems strange to me, why SSPX nuns would be attached to FSSP or endorsed by Vigano.  Why are they not their own SSPX.

Why would Lefebvre attach FSSP nuns to Vigano’s sister?

I'm totally confused.  How did Vigano's sister get involved?  Was Lefebvre's sister part of the SSPX?

The ones in Spokane were founded by ++Lefebrve's sister and are attached to the SSPX. The Carmelites across the border in Idaho are attached to the FSSP.
