  • "The back biter emerged from Hell all covered with flames and came to see his friend.  Recognizing his deceased friend at once, the man was seized with such trembling that he was unable to speak a word or even look upon the flaming ghost.  But the spirit spoke and said, "it is I, your friend, condemned to eternal hellfire.  I was brought to the tribunal of the Sovereign. Judge at the very moment of my death, and my accusers were all the people I had dishonored with my tongue. Since I could neither deny nor excuse what they accused me of, the Judge - alas! Thrice alas! - sentenced me to eternal damnation!"

After reading the pamphlet , I was scared because I have been guilty with sins of my tongue or words on Internet. I don't want to burn in Hell.  Back biting is everywhere.  It is all over tv and internet.  The media and Hollywood is full of sins of tongue and backbiting.
We all need to repent especially me.
To live with the Saints in Heaven is all bliss and glory....To live with the saints on Earth is just another story!  (unknown)

  • Well, that's the whole point of the story, to make us scared and contrite.  It should not end up in fear, though, because God's Mercy can overcome any sin, provided that we are contrite and have a firm purpose of amendment.  For backbiting to be a mortal sin, and thus worthy of hellfire (vs. venial sin meriting time in Purgatory) it would have to involve relatively grave matter or extreme malice.  Of course, as with all venial sin, when it becomes habitual and chronic (as often happens with backbiting), each offense lessens our degree of fraternal charity until it becomes impossible to remain in a state of grace.

  • It is available online here:
    sins of the tongue

(I am not familiar with the site so I hope there is nothing wrong with it.)

I have read this pamphlet several times.  I find it very encouraging in fighting this fault in myself, although I still have much work to do.  Thanks for posting about it.
Most sweet Jesus, whose overflowing charity for men is requited by so much forgetfulness, negligence and contempt, behold us prostrate before you, eager to repair by a special act of homage the cruel indifference and injuries to which your loving Heart is

  • This is why I don't tend to post frivolously online, and why I try to keep it objective.

Everything I write online, will be available to everyone pretty much for a very very long time. Never write a post when you are angry, stay away from the keyboard.

Yes, this is one of those virtues that really is the hardest to keep. How all the Saints kept such diligent custody of their tongue, is to their merit. Since this has to be one of those vices that is done so frequently with such impunity, that you can't even remember remotely just how much you have done it. Like a good accountant, it would be a good idea, to do your daily accounting (examination of conscience) go over how often you have sinned in this way.

Brother Thomas A Kempis, was quite fond of saying in his magnum Opus, Imitation of Christ. That if we would but conquer one vice per year, by the end of our lives we would be Saints.

If you have any more material of that sort, please post it. Its always an excellent reminder to all of us, what the Catholic moral standard is.
