For most of Church history, nobody had to figure this out. My great-grandmother went to her parish, received the sacraments, said her rosary and died a Catholic without ever having to evaluate whether her bishop had valid jurisdiction or whether some council taught heresy.
And now I hear that my salvation depends on getting the right answer to a question that actual theologians with decades of study can't agree on?

Here’s my dilemma as well. How about, “Whichever position, a combination of them, or none of them God says is right, that’s my position.” Is it a cop out? Maybe, but it’s the best I can do.
Added to my difficulty is the fact that the people closest to my “position” refuse to admit me to the Sacraments (priest), and have made it clear they (laity, chapel coordinators) don’t want me attending “their” Mass unless I promise to never partake of Mass and Sacraments from anyone else. Sorry, I cannot make a promise I’m not prepared to keep.
