I have read this book. It's worth noting that Alinsky's rules can also be used by traditionalists and conservatives of any stripe (religious, political, etc.), and used very effectively. The twelve rules (the part in bold green), taken all by themselves, are morally neutral.
I think it's entirely possible to "baptize Alinsky" the way Aquinas "baptized Aristotle".
And I have always taken the "reading with your lips moving" thing, or having someone read out loud to you, when you've given them something to read, as being the mark of a total nimrod. I used to see this in business all the time --- and there is surely no shortage of nimrods in the secular business world!
