  • Thoughts? Not bad, imho. Hopefully, it will be at least 50,000+ in the next 5-10 years; and soon after that, God willing, it will be the majority of Bishops and Priests of the Roman/Latin rite who will offer the Holy Sacrifice in the Tridentine Rite. Comments?

"The number is an estimation, of course, made by Christian Marquant for the French liturgical association "Paix liturgique".

This number is reached with the following subgroups.

    (1) Around 760 priests who belong to the Society of Saint Pius X (SSPX) and religious communities friendly to it.

    (2) Around 600 priests from those communities previously called "Ecclesia Dei" (that is, those established regularly following the motu proprio Ecclesia Dei).

    (3) Around 130 priests from religious communities that were never under the authority of the now-defunct "Pontifical Commission Ecclesia Dei" (for instance, the priests belonging to Fontgombault and its daughter-houses, or Norcia, etc).

    (4) At least 3,000 diocesan priests (maybe up to 5,000, if one includes those who are very cautious because of their local bishops) who celebrate it regularly, even if not exclusively, including 1,000 at least in the United States: this is the Summorum Pontificuм group, by far the largest.

Marquant adds: "Our 4,500 priests attached to the Traditional Mass (1500 "Trad" priests to which are added 3,000 diocesan or regular priests) represent at least 1.1% of the global Catholic clergy (or more, if we consider only the Latin Church priests, since it is a Latin liturgy, and if we would consider only active priests) who have remained or become Tridentine, which is far from being a ridiculous number if we consider that this identity was forbidden for a long time and remains widely persecuted. And, despite this, it is growing..."

"We wish also to make amends for the insults to which Your Vicar on earth and Your Priests are everywhere subjected [above all by schismatic sedevacantists - Nishant Xavier], for the profanation, by conscious neglect or Terrible Acts of Sacrilege, of the very Sacrament of Your Divine Love; and lastly for the Public Crimes of Nations who resist the Rights and The Teaching Authority of the Church which You have founded." - Act of Reparation to the Sacred Heart of Lord Jesus.

  • But how many are undoubtedly, certain priests?

  • Seeing that in 1960 there were 53,796 priests celebrating the True Mass in just the USA alone, 5,000 priests worldwide only shows the number of priests is still in a major decline.

Priests: In 1920 there were 21,019 total priests in the United States. In 1930 there were 26,925, in 1940 there were 33,912, in 1945 there were 38,451, in 1950 there were 42,970, in 1955 there were 46,970, in 1960 there were 53,796. This is not the mark of a declining Church, but of a vigorous Church — in 1960 it had a record number of men who were its frontline soldiers, whose ranks had grown 15 percent in the five years between 1955 and 1960. I wonder if the growth in the 1940's and 1950's were due to Jєω/commie/infiltrators, liberals and ɧoɱosɛҳųαƖs. All preparing for the revolution (Vatican Council II) and the planned Crisis in the Church.

That's a fair question, although I personally don't think that's the case. I think a percentage of crooks infiltrating is most likely, like maybe 15% or so may have been infiltrators. Who knows? After V2, it sure seemed like pretty much all of the NO priests and bishops were commie infiltrators.

In one of his talks, fr. John O'Connor said that no matter what the situation, it's a known commie tactic that it only takes a relatively small number of people in any group, like 1% or 2% in unison, to get 99% of the rest to go along with the 1% or 2%. At the V2 Council, all the bishops did not go in as commie crooks, only a very few did - but they nearly all came out as commie crooks, due perhaps to the few infiltrators who got the rest to go along with them.

The SSPX has an article showing the new rite of episcopal consecrations is certainly valid. http://sspx.org/en/validity-new-rite-episcopal-consecrations

Indeed, since it is derived from eastern rites, specifically the Coptic and West Syrian ones, (which is a mistake imo, done for ecuмenical reasons, but not a mistake that causes invalidity - and it is not possible for ancient eastern rites to be invalid), the new rite could not be invalid without those ancient and eastern rites also being invalid, which is impossible.

"The two rites are the Coptic rite, used in Egypt, and the Western Syrian rite, used notably by the Maronites.[75] Let us note in passing that these two rites are perfectly Catholic. This has nothing to do with the rites of “schismatic and heretical Abyssinians,” as one “Coomaraswamist” pontificated on the Internet on July 11, 2005. Beside the fact that neither the Maronites nor the Copts are Abyssinian,[76] this Internet pontificator apparently does not know that the Eastern “schismatics and heretics” use the same rites as the Catholics. To assure ourselves of the validity of Pope Paul VI’s rite, it will suffice for us to place side by side the new consecratory prayer and the two Eastern rites in question. The validity of these two rites can in no wise be called into question, otherwise the Coptic Church (Catholic as well as Orthodox) and the Syrian Church (which includes the Maronites) would have neither bishops nor priests, nor would they ever have had them. We have prepared a four-column comparison (refer Table 3: Four-column comparison of 1968 edition with Hippolytus text, Coptic and Maronite Rites) with, in order from left to right, Pope Paul VI’s new consecratory prayer,[77] the Latin version of the Apostolic Tradition [i.e., “of Hippolytus”—Ed.],[78] the Coptic rite, and the Syrian rite. For the latter two texts we have used the Denzinger translation.[79] With the four prayers transcribed into the same language, the comparison is made easy."

    See Table 3 here http://sspx.org/en/table-3-validity-new-episcopal-consecrations

This very scholarly study by the SSPX should settle the issue. Beside it, there is also the fact pointed out even by Bp. Williamson, that Eucharistic Miracles have occurred at Masses said by Priests Ordained in the New Rite, which shows that neither rite is per se invalid.

It's possible to be against this kind of east-west ecuмenist syncretism without needlessly and inaccurately exaggerating the matter.
People will disagree, I guess. But for the SSPX and most Indult Groups, the study has settled the matter and we move on.

I agree, Stubborn, that there was a vocations crisis in the decades after Vatican II. The facts show that clearly, both in the Priesthood and in Religious Life. The number of Priests in the world today however is around 415,000, that's still a considerable number even after the decline, "Between 1970 and 2012, the number of priests declined from 419,728 to 414,313.[2]" https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Priest_shortage_in_the_Catholic_Church Before Vatican II, the ratio of Priests:Faithful was about 1:1000. Now, it's closer to approaching 1:3000. Those are the statistics. In some countries, the Priest shortage is more acute.

The number of Priests offering the Traditional Mass is now around 1.2% of that number. When it reaches at least 10-15%, around 50-60,000, if the total remains around 420 K, Tradition will be in a much stronger position in the Church going forward. In France, it's estimated more than 50% of Priests may be from Traditional Orders in about 20 years from now. Though many challenges remain, things look good for the future of the Church. Prayer and Sacrifice will bring us to Victory. May God grant us many Good Holy Bishops and Priests, and may our Shepherds and Apostles soon collectively re-discover all the Treasures of Tradition.

  • Of course they do....since 2005.  When Benedict XVI was the first Novus Ordo pope to be consecrated bishop in the New Rite.
