Title: Raleighs Bishop has name surfaced on Philly Grand Jury report
Post by: KevinW on February 19, 2011, 06:41:55 AM
Philadelphia District Attorney R. Seth Williams, a Catholic himself, has submitted a Grand Jury report in regards to the investigation of alleged sɛҳuąƖ abuse by clergy and the subsequent cover-up and protection by officials of the Archdiocese of Philadelphia.

In the District Attorney's none-too-veiled efforts to show examples of the Archdiocese purposefully turning a blind eye to credible evidence, the name of Raleigh's Catholic Bishop Michael F. Burbidge, who is also the former Auxiliary Bishop of Philadelphia, has made its way to the Grand Jury Report.

Bishop Burbidge is not, nor has never been, personally accused of perpetrating a case of sɛҳuąƖ abuse.

As District Attorney Williams states in the beginning of his Overview of the Report;

   In September 2003, a grand jury of local citizens released a report detailing a sad history of sɛҳuąƖ abuse by priests of the Archdiocese of Philadelphia. That abuse was known, tolerated, and hidden by high church officials, up to and including the Cardinal himself. The previous grand jury was frustrated that it could not charge either the abusers or their protectors in the church, because the successful cover-up of the abuse resulted in the expiration of the statute of limitations.
