Title: Purpose Of Biblical Law
Post by: roscoe on October 18, 2009, 06:28:14 PM
I was just wondering-- is it the purpose of Biblical Law to tell us what to do or what not to do?

The Law does not make us holy. It does not make us good.

It acts as a mirror.

It shows us what perfection is. By comparing ourselves to It, we are shown that we are sinful.

To quote St. Paul:

"If righteousness could come by the Law, then Christ died in vain!"

You do realize, of course that there is a CHURCH, which is needed to interpret and enforce Divine Law, don't you?

This is exactly my point CM. Because of my interpretation of Gen 9:3, I have been accused of excercising a Sola Scriptura philosophy. The prob is that there is no Church interpretation of the passage that is at odds with mine and if there was I would submit.

My understanding of God's Law is that it tells us what NOT to do. This is why Urban and Innocent proclaimed AGAINST tobacco and some Popes have even proclaimed AGAINST make-up for women. It seems to be Jansenist philosophy that we have to wait for God to tell us something is all right b4 we can participate. What then can be the purpose of God giving us free will?
