PROPHETIC SLEEP OF BROTHER JACOBO MASSA,
ONE OF THE FIRST FRANCISCANS
THIS PROPHECY SEES THE FUTURE OF THE FRANCISCAN ORDER UNDER THE FIGURE OF A TREE THAT GROWS AND GIVES FRUITS, BUT THAT THEN IT IS SCOTTED BY A FURIOUS STORM UNTIL IT IS DROPPED, AND THAT, FINALLY, IT REBOUND TRIUMPHANT FROM THE ROOT OF THE FIRST TREE.

"Brother James of Massa, to whom God opened the door of his secrets and gave perfection to the knowledge and intelligence of the divine Scripture and things to come, was of such holiness, that the brothers Gil of Assisi, Marcos de Montino, Junípero and Lucida, said of him that they did not know anyone in the world before God (...) This brother James (...) being once in prayer, was caught in God, and remained three days in rapture (...) In that rapture was revealed by God what was to happen regarding our Order (...) after having revealed God many things about the state of church militant, had the vision of a beautiful and large and very strong tree, whose roots were of gold, and its fruits were men, all younger brothers (...) Then he saw how Christ sat on a grandiose and dazzling white throne and how he called San Francisco and gave him a chalice full of life spirit and sent him, saying: Go visit your brothers and give them a drink of this chalice of the spirit of life, because the spirit of Satan is going to rise up against them and will shake them and many of them will fall and will not rise again . And Christ gave San Francisco two angels to accompany him. San Francisco came and began to give drink of the cup of life to his brothers. (...) And there were few who received it and drank it with due respect and due devotion. Those who received it with devotion and drank everything, immediately became resplendent as the sun; those who poured out everything and did not receive it with devotion, became black and dark, deformed and horrible to look at; those who partly drank it and partly poured it out, partly became luminous and partly gloomy, more or less according to the amount they had drunk or spilled. (...) those who had drunk the whole chalice, were transported by the angels to a place of life, eternal light and splendid bliss (...) That storm lasted so long, that it knocked down the tree and the wind took it away. After the storm, from the root of this tree, which was made of gold, another tree sprang up , all of gold, which produced leaves, flowers and golden fruits.
