    Under the Test Laws:

    Catholics were prohibited from holding elected office and several municipalities did not allow Catholic churches within their geographic boundaries. Our military did not permit Catholic priests within the services until the Mexican War when Irish soldiers were executed for refusing to fire upon Mexican soldiers who were Catholic.
